【ビッグベンとリトルベン/大ブリテンと小ブリテン・・・（イギリスとフランス）】
《 Big Ben and Little Ben, Great Britain and Little Britain 》
大や小が接頭語となった地名を見詰めていると、さまざまなことが連想され、僕の心は地球を駆け巡ります。
ずいぶんと昔、ロンドンのヴィクトリア鉄道駅の階上に付設されたホテル（地上では道路工事をしていてかなり喧噪でしたが）に一週間ほど滞在した時、ヴィクトリア宮殿の周りをあちらこちら、一人（たまにはイギリス人の友達と二人）で散歩していました。
テームズ川沿いのヴィクトリア遊歩道（Victoria Embankment) を歩いていて、ウエストミンスター橋の端に聳えるビッグベンを見上げ、写真を何枚も撮りましたが、観光ガイドの冊子などに見掛けるビッグベンだけでは物足りなく思い、橋の袂に建てられているモニュメント、 ブーディ像の馬を添えました。
From some place names attached, as a prefix, with "Big" or " Little ", my imagination would expand to curious places around the globe .
When I visited an English friend Paul in London already decades ago, he showed me around, wherefore he was helpful, often instructive.
I stayed at a hotel on the Victoria Railway Station, wherefrom I walked aroud alone early in the morning, to such places as Backingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, Westminster Palace ....... Every place was very attractive. One of them was at the Westminster Bridge, the tower of Big Ben, which is tall enough to be viewed from various places in the city.
While I was rambling along the Thames River, I could see Big Ben, which looked very small from a distant place at the Sphinx monuments near Charing Cross Station. By the sphinx was Cleopatra's Needle, which, altogether, gave me some atmosphere of Egypt.
One morning I walked alone before Backingham Palace and along The Mall , eastward to the Trafalgar Square, where were amusing things such as the fountain pond at the centre, the Nelson's Column which might be the most famous attraction there and the lion monuments. Surprisingly beyond a lion statue, the Big Ben tower could be viewed, from the fountain.
By the way, the Nelson's column is well known around the world, whereas those lions at the foot of Nelson are not so familiar.
Now here in Tokyo, a replica of the lion of Trafalgar Square is built and set in front of the famous department store, Mitsukoshi, seemingly as a symbol.
In that sense, the lions at Trafalgar Squre are very impressive to me.
華麗でユニークな姿のビッグベンは、高い塔になっているので、街なかのさまざまな、意外な地点からも眺めることが出来て、それぞれの写真は、対象がビッグ・ベンであるのに、撮影場所のそれぞれの風景を物語ってくれます。
テームズ川を歩いているとアフリカ的なモニュメントがいくつかあり、スフィンクスもその一つで、ここからもビッグベンが見えました。
バッキンガム宮殿前から The Mall 通りをぶらぶら歩くと、ネルソン提督の50メートルという高い塔柱のある、トラファルガー広場に行くことが出来ます。
噴水の縁に休憩し、南アフリカ大使館の外壁に付けられたアンテロープ（ Springbok ）、博物館、あるいはパンクな若者たちを見まわしながら、日本の三越がモデルとしたと言われるライオン像とその台座（2メートルくらいの高さ）に遊ぶ子供たち、たまに青年たちを見ている時、ライオン像の後方に聳えるビッグベンに気付いたのでした。
僕のロンドンのアルバムの中で、この構図は特にお気に入りの一枚です。

ある朝ヴィクトリア駅前を、たぶん東口だと思うのですが、散歩していると、目の前の小さな広場に小さな時計塔がありました。これは、ウエストミンスターにビッグベンがあるのだからリトルベンがあってもいいだろう、という趣旨で造られたそうです。
Early in the morning, I usually left the hotel for the palace but took another direction this morning, to a busy square with office workers, just front side of the Victoria Railway Station.
There stood a kind of grandfather clock, about 10 meters tall, which was quite beautiful and conspicuous, but nobody gave any glance at it, on that morning. They erected it after Big Ben and named it Little Ben.
While Big Ben is grand or splended, Little Ben is cute.
Looking at photos of Big Ben, Little Ben, Trafalgar Square, Vackingham Palace and some others in London, Paul one of my curious friends, comes into my mind, who journeyed to South Africa, wherefrom he voyaged, on a huge cargo, to Asian countries, then Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, and finally Tokyo.
He showed me not only the pleasure of world journeys but also table tennis and golf. His style of those sports was completely steady, no risky shots, wherefore he made no unforced errors, which was a great instruction for me.
Nevertheless, it was curious that his journeys were full of adventures !!!
Big Ben also reminds me of a DVD, Robert Downey Jr.'s " Shirlock Holmes , " wherein drastic fighting was performed in the tower of the parliament and on some bridge, being under construction, over the Thames. Even in that rough wild situaiton, Holmes and the lovely lady Irene showed a very faint feeling of love, which was impressive to me.
ビッグベンで思い出すことがいくつかあります。
かつて、僕が世界旅を始める前、イギリス人の友達 Paul は、今は故人ですが、僕に旅の楽しさを教えてくれました。彼はアフリカ大陸を放浪し、南アフリカから輸送船に載せてもらってインド洋を渡り、アジア諸国、パプアニューギニア、ニュージーランドなどで自由気ままな旅をし、やがて日本人女性と結婚して東京に住み着いた人でした。
僕にとっては、ゴルフや卓球の師でもありました。
彼のゴルフと卓球は、無理することなく、堅実にプレーする、という姿勢を貫いていました。しかし、しかしながらそんな彼が世界旅の中では、僕が思うにかなりの冒険を繰り返していましたから、彼の本当の心は如何に、何処に、と不思議です・・・。
Robert Downey Jr. の Shirlock Holmes が思い出されます。ホームズが、ビッグベン塔の下で決闘シーンを演じ、テームズ川に建設途中の橋の上では、あわや川に落ちなんとする、スリルに満ちた闘いがありました。そんなシーンの中には、ホームズとアイリーン Irene という女性との間に強力なしかしか細い恋心が醸成されていて、僕は心打たれ、後編のDVD ”Shadow Play" の始まりで彼女がモリアーティに毒殺される悲話を思うと、心が圧迫されそうになるのですが、・・・でも繰り返し見ています。
ビッグベンやリトルベン は、あれもこれも、物理的にも精神的にも、僕の心にしっかりと、住み着いているようです。
** 南太平洋にある地名の ”大島” と ”小島” **

世界地図を眺めると、対になる地名がとても気になります。南太平洋のポリネシアにも、Big Ben と Little Ben のように、大 と 小、こちらでは Big が Nui と Little が Iti の付いた地名があちらこちらに見られ、その背景が見えると楽しいものです。
2020年春、僕はタヒチに行くために飛行機とホテルを予約し、仕事日程も調整し、支払いを済ませました。すると直後、コロナ・パンデミック問題で全てキャンセルすることになりました。
予約した飛行機は タヒチ・ヌイ （Air Tahiti Nui/大タヒチ） 航空でした。
タヒチと言えば、画家のゴーギャンとか作家のモームが容易に連想されそうですが、彼らよりも100年以上前、イギリス人のクック船長やフランス人のブーガンヴィル（彼の名前はピンクのはでやかな花、ブーゲンビレアでよく知られています）などがすでに訪れていて、彼らの報告がゴーギャンなどの好奇心旺盛な西欧人を南太平洋に誘惑した、と言えそうです。
・・・で、タヒチ島の名前です。瓢箪のような形をした島は、中央の地峡でくびれ、その上方つまり北側の方が大きな丸になっていて、こちらはタヒチヌイ Tahiti Nui 、下の小さい方はタヒチイチ Thahiti Iti と呼ばれています。
ポリネシア語では ”Nui” が ”大”、 ”Iti” が ”小” を意味していますので、それぞれは大タヒチ、小タヒチという意味になるのです。 イチが一番でヌイが二番、ではないのです・・・。

Thinking of place names, the similarity between Tahiti of Society Islands and Easter Island makes me excited, for some place names with "Nui " as " Big " and "Iti " as " Little " can be recognized there in that vast South Pacific.
In the spring of 2020, I completed a plan of my journey to Tahiti . After the payment for the air tickets and a hotel, which is a memorial location to Captain Cook facing the Matavai Bay, the worst disease of COVID-19 destroyed my schedule totally. It could mean that I had to give up a new series of my blog on my journey into Tahiti, therefore !
The air company I would take was Air Tahiti Nui .
As it is known well, Tahiti Island is made up with two round parts, big one and small, as the whole land is narrowed or tightened at the middle. The larger one is called Tahiti Nui and the other Tahti Iti .
The pair of Nui and Iti is the major point of my story, the former implies "big" and the latter is " little ", which, therefore, can be " Big Tahiti " and " Little Tahiti ."
There is another curious and exciting coincidence about those Nui and Iti in the South Pacific, tremendously distant from each other.
There are two more places in the world, whereto I am longing to journey ; one is Tahiti and the other Easter Island. It is said that both islands are included in the same linguistic region in the South Pacific Ocean.
As mentioned above, the larger part of the gourd-shaped island Tahiti is called with " Nui. "Easter Island has another, native name " Rapa Nui ", which is accordingly " Big Rapa. "
The name " Nui / Big " of Rapa pushed me to seach some maps for the "Iti " of " Rapa " which, accordingly " Little Rapa ", should be somewhere in the South Pacific, which was finally found on a map in the Society Islands, near Tahiti.
It could mean that Easter Islanders and Tahitians speak the same language, naturally with certain dialects. Therefore it is said that they are located in the " Polynesian Triangle of one linguistic region. " It is made up with three apexes of Easter Island , New Zealand and Hawaii .
An extra story about the name of Easter Island. A Chillian who worked for its embassy in Tokyo told me another name of Rapa Nui, " the Navel of the Universe ", which actually showed the image of its isolated location in the vast Ocean.
ヌイ Nui とイチ Iti という タヒチの名前から僕の心はイースター島までワープしました。
随分と昔、在東京チリ大使館の某氏から、イースター島は英語で The Navel of the Universe と呼んでいます、と教えていただきました、宇宙のおへそ・・・。確かに四方が大洋に囲まれた、南太平洋の孤島、です。
イースター島の生活や歴史を調査して、ノルウェー人のトール・ヘイエルダールは 『アクアク』 Aku-Aku という本を著して、とても楽しく、面白く報告しています。僕の愛読書の一つです。
・・・島の名前です。イースター島は18世紀オランダ人によって名付けられましたが、ポリネシア語では ラパヌイ Rapa Nui と言われ、Nui ですから、まさに ”大きなラパ” ということになります。
ならば、ポリネシアには ”小さなラパ” があるはず・・・と確信し、南太平洋のハワイ諸島、ニュージーランド、イースター島を頂点とする、いわゆるポリネシアン・トライアングルの中を、暇にまかせて隈なく探し、そして、タヒチ島を含むフレンチポリネシアとも言われるソシエティ諸島の南部にポツンと Rapa Iti 島を見つけ出しました。イースター島から遠く離れたタヒチの方に ”小さなラパ” ” Iti な Rapa "があったのです。
地名からの想像（多少の確信を持って）ですが、イースター島の人達とタヒチの人達はポリネシア語で、それぞれの訛りがあっても、会話が成り立つ、ということでしょう、だとすれば、タヒチの人達とニュージーランドの人達は会話できますので（クック船長が1769～70年に経験していました）、ニュージーランドの人達とイースター島の人達も話し合いが出来るのかも知れません。
A=B、 B=C、よってA=C という中学時代の数学の証明問題を思い出します（？）。
・・・イースター島に旅してそのあたりを確認してみたい、とは思っているのですが、コロナがいつ収まることでしょうか・・・
※ イースター島の南の沖合に小さな島がいくつかあります。一つは ”大きな小島 Motu Nui ”、 その隣は”小さな小島 Motu Iti ” とありますが、長くなりそうですから、これ以上言及しません・・・イースター島への旅のご報告の時に・・・。
※ There is an extra story about another pair of tiny islets just below Easter Island, which are called "Motu Iti, a little tiny islet " and " Motu Nui, a big tiny islet " with no more details for now. A story about these tiny islets should be written after I visit there someday soon, hoping the terrible Covid-19 pandemic should calm down.

*** Great Britain and Little Britain ***
さて、話題が南太平洋を漂流しましたが、イギリスとフランスの大きな地名と小さな地名に戻ります。
イギリスのメイン・アイランドは、僕にとって、春に空から眺めた黄色（菜の花）と緑のタペストリーが印象的な丘陵地で、その名は Great Britain です。・・・ならばどこかに小ブリテン、Little Britain があるかもしれない、と長年気にかかっていました。ある時、フランスのブルターニュ（ Bretagne / Brittany )が 英語のBritain と似ていることに気付き、インターネットで、Wikipediaなどいくつかのサイトを調べ、確かにビスケー湾の最北部の小ブリタニー半島 Little Brittany Peninsula を見付けました。
イギリス海峡の上方がGreat Britainで下方はフランスのLittle Britain なのです。昔は同じ民族が暮らしていたそうで、したがって同じ名前の地名 Britain が残されたようです。イギリスとフランスの、深く複雑に絡みあった歴史をここで述べてみたいのですが、興味はあっても、残念ながら、僕には纏められそうにありません・・・。

The story is now back to Europe, about Great Britain and Bretagne of France.
The UK's main island is, for me who usually use Leeds and Bradford Airport, a land cloured yellow with rape blossoms, which is called Great Britain.
Therefrom the idea that there might be " Little Britain " somewhere has nested in my brain for a long time. Recently I found a similar place name BRITTANY or BRETAGNE along the west coast of France ; the former spelling is in English and the latter French.
Brittany would be occasionally called " Little Britain ," though it does not seem to be official.
As I learned that Great Britain and Btetagne have etymologically a same origin, I got tempted to write about the history of the relations of British and French Britain. However it has so much complilcated that I cannot manage to edit about it......
