【ウィットビー湾のカモメたち】
【 Sea Gulls around Whitby Harbour 】
ある朝早く目が覚めると、カーテンの隙間から朝の空がほんのりと紫＆ピンク色に見えましたので日の出を直感し、早速カメラを首にかけてSkinner Street にあるホテルを跳び出し、左に曲がって Flowergate 通りを下り、普段は通らない路地を近道して、太陽が昇る少し前に埠頭に着きました。
３0分ほどでしょうか、水平線に少しずつ昇ってくる太陽の動き、色の変化を、イングランド北東部に位置するウィットビーの早春の、まだうす寒い朝の空気の中で、じーっと見入っていました。
カモメが1羽か２羽、どこかに佇んでいて、僕の視線をとらえようとしていました。埠頭から眺めるウィットビーの景色の中では、日の出とか崖上のセント・メアリー教会が主役で、そしてカモメたちは脇役かもしれませんが、彼らがいないと一枚の絵になりません。
・・・・・・それでも僕の心の中では、夜明け前からじ～っとしているカモメも、昼時のいたずらなカモメも主役になって、朝焼けの、あの美しい暁の空でさえカモメの影を引き立ててくれているではないか（！？）、と思うのですが・・・。
On an early morning, as a sky, coloured in light pink and purple, came into my room through the curtains, I got out of the hotel with the camera hanging on my neck, hurried down the Flower Gate street to the Whitby Harbour , through a shortcut, narrow path which is not a usual way for me.
Some minutes before the sun appeared upon the horizen, I could arrive at the sea front, West Pier and enjoy the beauty of the sunrise, which lasted about 30 minutes, in the chilly air, early May in Whitby, the northeast England .
As the sky over the sea turned faintly bright, a couple of sea gulls, supportingly, enriched the atmosphere of the rising sun and St. Mary's Church. Their silhouettes, just sitting still at a pole's top or the roof of a hut along the harbour, could not be a primary object in the picture but necessary secondary one.
・・・・・・ However, though it generally seems so, in my heart, the sea gulls at dawn and active and naughty ones in the daytime could be recognized to be the main stuffs in a picture of Whitby , even the colourful sky at dawn evaluated the sea gulls' shadows, seemingly ・・・.
（ ここはホテルからウィットビー・ハーバーに出る一番の近道で、あまり通りませんが、この路地の雰囲気が好きです。 ）
( There is a lovely, narrow short way to the pier, wherethrough the harbour's water and the tiny church on the East Cliff can be seen. )
カモメに見送られて港を出る小舟は、北海の沖で、贅沢にも暁の佳景を背景に、漁をしているようでした。
A tiny boat was sailing away
off the pier to the North Sea ,
at the sunrise.
A sea gull was still
along the west pier,
seemingly to see her off.
🌅🌅🌅 in the daytime 🌅🌅🌅
昼頃になると、カモメが湾のそちこちに現れて、僕らに付き添ってきますので、埠頭をフィッシュ・アンド・チップスを食べ歩きするのは、ちょっと怖いです。
Now in the daytime, a lot of sea gulls were trying to occupy their own positions around the harbour, where some were following / accompanying the walkers. It was somewhat scary to walk about with fish-and- chips .
毎朝のことですが、目が覚めてカーテンを開くと、窓の前には、屋根や煙突に、カモメがいて、まだ目覚めていないようにぽつねんとしています。僕が顔を出してもカメラを向けても去ろうとしません。ある時は、いつもの細い眼がさらに細く、彼、いや彼女の頭は、確実に寝ている、ようでした。
As I opened the curtains, there were, almost every morning, a pair of sea gulls abode before me on the roof or chimney.
One morning, one of them seemed to be sleeping yet, which kept one of her eyes half opened, rather closed, whereas their eyes are usually thin. She might not recognize or mind my emergence at that daybreak.
