【裂けたクレバスだらけの氷河】
【Glaciers Full of Crevasses】
氷河を見ると、1974年から７６年にかけて、植村直己さんが、グリーンランドからアラスカのコッツビューまで、犬ぞりで単独冒険をしたことを思い出します。
氷のない夏は島に滞在して、冬の北極海沿岸の氷の世界を、右に走り左に走り凸凹の少ない場所を探し、毎日毎日、少しずつ前進していました。ブリザードがあれば、ゴーっとうなり、揺れるテントの中で、氷からお湯を沸かしてコーヒーを飲む、彼の姿が想像されます。
ノルウェーの探検家アムンゼンが、イギリス人のスコットよりもほんの少し先んじて南極点に到達しました。その時彼は犬ぞりを利用しましたが（スコットはウマを）、彼の旅も、植村直己さんのように、氷の丘あり氷の谷ありで、まさに死闘と言えるものでした。
アンカレッジ市街からさほど遠くない、僕が観察した氷河も、犬ぞりが走れないような、クレバスだらけの場所がいっぱいありました。
There was once a great Japanese Adventurer Naomi Uemura who made an amazing journey from Greenland to Alaska with a dog sled, alone, in 1970s. After that he climbed up into Mt. Denali (McKinley) in Alaska and sadly never returned out of the mountain. His fame is for his deeds in Arctic world, Canada, Alaska, Greenland and many others.

He tailored a dog sled , longer than ordinal one, for the crevasses, rough ice when he made the adventure along the Arctic Ocean coast.
During the journey, he had to move around, rightwards and leftwards, to avoid hilly ice, crevasses and icy valleys. Occasionally he sleded on the ice in the sea and once broke the ice and slid into the freezing sea water, struggling in the very danger, so much luckily he could draw out the sled.
空から眺めると、時には造形作品ともいえるようなものがいくつかありました。
巨大なクジラが口を開けて敵を威嚇しているように見えたり、アホウドリが首をすくめているようだったり・・・。
One of the glaciers curiously looked like a whale, opening its fearful mouth.
Another was like a bird. Two streams of the ice came from the left slope into the chief current, which amusingly and surprisingly built up a fake face of an albatross.
Below the plane was a smooth, seemingly, white ice field sighted. As the plane progressed, the next part of the field was absolutely different, rough crevasses, the sideview of which, as I flew closer, was awful.
平滑な（そのように見える）氷原の先方には、深く裂けたクレバスの横顔を眺めることが出来ました。
There was an curious huge rock or a dark ice mass (photo, below ) , whereon a lot of lines were engraved, like those carved seemingly with a chisel, and packed with white ice and made up as an art work.
It should be painted in Indian ink , if I had enough time and painting skill ・・・!?
中央の岩、あるいは氷の塊（写真、上）は、まるで彫刻刀でたくさん切り込まれ、そこに白い氷が象嵌されているように見えました。
これを大きな墨絵として再現してみたくなります・・・時間があれば、そして僕に画才がひょっこりと芽生えてくれれば・・・ですが？
