Famed East Village Deli Closes Its Doors

The famed Second Avenue Deli, a New York City staple in the East Village since 1954, has shut its doors and may close permanently due to a rent dispute with its landlord.
A recorded announcement on the deli's answering machine says, "Thank you for calling the Second Avenue Deli. We are temporarily closed. We apologize for any inconvenience."
The deli's owner says the building's new owners are trying to raise the rent by $9,000 to $33,000 a month.
The owner says the place also needs major renovations and it won't pay to do them if they don't sign a long term lease.
Both sides have been talking, but it's not clear when there will be a resolution.
Last year, the Second Avenue Deli celebrated its 50th birthday.
