朝の通勤電車の最後尾の車輌に立ってぼんやりとしていると、なんの根拠もないまま小学校五年生ぐらいだと確信した、どこか大人の女性の雰囲気を帯びはじめている女の子に惹かれたのは、もちろん自分をナボコフのハンバート・ハンバートになぞらえてのことではない。「あかいたまが六つ、しろいたまが四つ」という彼女の綺麗な声が聞こえたからだ。いかにも聡明そうなその女の子は、傍らの小学校一、二年生ぐらいの、彼女の胸の高さに届かない男の子、たぶん弟さんだろう、に算数を教えていたのだ。そう、二人は車内で算数の文章題について語っていたのだが、姉が弟にするその語り方はまるで詩のように美しかった。二人が電車を下りたあとも、「あかいたま、しろいたま」というフレーズが「紅い珠、白い珠」となって、頭の中でさわやかに残った。
「赤と白」というフレーズは通常素直に受け取れない「意味」で満ちあふれている。「日の丸」がそうだし、2009 年のオバマ前大統領の就任演説 inauguration speech でもそうだった。
オバマ前大統領の就任演説にあらわれる「赤と白」は、蓮實さんも『随想』で書いていたが、血なまぐさいものである。そこまで読まないといけない。しかし、オバマの演説は頭の中に具体的な情景を結べることだけは確かである。
その次の大統領の場合はどうであろうか。
It is time to remember that old wisdom our soldiers will never forget: that whether we are black or brown or white, we all bleed the same red blood of patriots, we all enjoy the same glorious freedoms, and we all salute the same great American Flag.
