なぜ下の例のように、コンピュータを使って作業をするときに前置詞 on を使うのか考えたことがあった。

それに答えるためには、wipe (拭く) という動詞を考えることがヒントになるのかもしれない。例文はまたしても、F. Scott Fitzgerald の “The Great Gatsby” を使う。その第二章の冒頭部分である。
The interior was unprosperous and bare; the only car visible was the dust-covered wreck of a Ford which crouched in a dim corner. It had occurred to me that this shadow of a garage must be a blind, and that sumptuous and romantic apartments were concealed overhead, when the proprietor himself appeared in the door of an office, wiping his hands on a piece of waste. He was a blond, spiritless man, anaemic, and faintly handsome.
(訳例) 内装は立派でなく素っ気なかった。1台だけ見える車は埃をかぶったフォードのポンコツで、薄暗い部屋の隅にひっそりと置いてあった。ふと思ったのは、ガレージのこの暗さはきっとなにかの目くらましで、贅沢でロマンチックな部屋が頭上には隠されているんだということだった。すると、店の持ち主自身が事務所のドアのところに現れた。その男は両手をぼろ切れにこすりつけていた。金髪で、精気に欠け、無気力そうだったが、顔立ちはハンサムといえないこともなかった。
wipe は面白い動詞である。タオルを手にもって一緒に動かしながら拭くようなときは with を使い、靴の泥を床に固定されたマットなどで拭くようなときは on を使う。辞書には次の二つの例文が出ている。
He wiped his face with the towel.
He wiped his shoes on the mat.
先ほどの例文では ”wiping his hands on a piece of waste" となっているので、ぼろ切れの方は固定されているはずだ。一つの想定としては、首かズボンの腰のところにぼろ切れがぶらさげられており、店の持ち主はそれに両手をこすりつけながら拭いているということが考えられる。
以上のことが wipe という動詞にだけあてはまるのではなく一般にもあてはまれば、道具を固定して使う場合は、on で、手などにもって一緒に動かしながら使う場合は with を使うということになる。wipe は布のようなものを道具として使う。布は固定して使うことも、一緒に動かすこともできるので、両方の使用ケースが考えられるということだ。
このことを証明できるなにかいい例文がないか調べたが、以下のような例文があった。楽器に関するものである。
The band became the boys’ ad hoc answer to the routine of isolated prep-school life. Along with Round and Prouty on guitar, it featured Radcliff on the piano, classmate Peter Land on drums and Gagarin with maracas. And of course, there was that guy on the bass. Even then, Kerry stood out. He caught on quickly and was soon an integral part of the Electras.
以上の例文にある楽器で、手で一緒に動かすのは with が使われているマラカスだけで、その他は on である。次の文章は、shaker だが、with が使われている。
Let your child enjoy making sounds with the shaker.
ブルースなどでハモニカを吹く場合は、ハモニカはスタンドに固定されているから、on が使われるはずだ。
Sometimes, one would play a blues tune on the harmonica.
