第１回「二世に会い、日系人と交流するツアー」が終了しました。
それはそれはとても濃密なツアーとなりました。
今回は、前半のマウイ島篇をご紹介します。
2月10日、監督の松元と参加者4名の方々はホノルル空港で集合しました。
今回は、なんと女性ばかりでしたが、年齢は40代、50代、60代と様々です。
しかし初めて会ってすぐに意気投合。やはりハワイの空気がそうさせるのでしょうか。
最初の訪問地マウイ。
カフルイ空港に着いたその足で、本作がサポート・交流を目的とするカンシャ・プリスクールのあるニセイ・ヴェテランズ・メモリアル・センターへ。
エデュケーションセンターでは、スタッフの方々の歓迎を受け、カンシャ・プリスクールを見学しディレクターのシャーリーンさんと意見の交換。そして同敷地内にあるアダルト・デイケアでもみなさんが私たちの到着を待ってくれていました。
その中でお一人、100歳を迎えられた「カズト・タカハシさん」がおられました。
福島からの移民を両親に持ち、パイアで生まれたカズトさんも、同じようにさとうきび労働に従事し厳しい生活を続けました。
ただしカズトさんの言葉には、二世のピジンが残っていました。
「最初のプランテーションで働いて、バンバイ、もっと給料の良い他のプランテーションに移ったよ」のバンバイ（”後で”）です。
NVMCを辞した後は、このツアー最高齢のトム・ヤマダさん（102歳）宅へ。
マグロの赤身を買い込んで持って行き、トムさんに見せると「マグロのカットは私がやります！」と言って薄く薄く刺身を切り始めました。トムさんはマグロの赤身を薄く切った刺身が大好きです。これまた大好きなシャンパンを片手に、常に笑顔のトムさん。
参加者の中に同志社卒業の方がおられて、トムさんに「同志社の校歌を」とリクエストしたところ、しっかりと最後まで歌い切りました。これには一同驚きとともに感動です。
また美空ひばりがマウイ公演に訪れた際は、トムさんがマウイを案内したのだとか。
東条英機の通訳や美空ひばりの案内など、日本にとってとても重要な人物に関わっておられるトムさんでした。
その後、アラカワ郡長ご夫妻とも面会し、宮古島市長から預かった親書を手渡しました。
郡長からは、マウイのコーヒーと冊子のお土産を頂戴し30分ほど会談をしました。
しかし郡長も奥様も二世や一世に対する感謝の言葉を口にしておられ、松元が「Okagesama deですね」と申し上げると頷かれていました。
11日は、少しだけゆっくりと。
朝、マウイ・コミュニティ・カレッジで行われるスワップミートを見学し、参加者の一人の方がいつも購入しているというレイのお店を訪ねてみると、なんとそのおばあさんは日系二世の方でした。
「アサノ・スイヅさん（年齢失念）」は、お兄さんがMIS通訳兵だったそうで、ご主人のお仕事のために1970年代にマウイに来られ、そのままリタイヤしたそうです。
しかしとても素敵なレイを編んでいて、購入して首にかけていたところ、他の来場客から「まぁ、素敵なレイ。どこで購入したの？」と６～７回は聞かれたでしょうか。
スワップミートを後にして、近くのマウイ神社へ。
３年前にお亡くなりになった「トラコ・アリネ宮司（享年100歳）」のお嬢さんが、拝殿だけではなく、本殿もご案内いただきました。マウイ神社の玉垣を整備する際、次にお会いするヒロシ・アリスミさんの会社「有住ブラーダス会社」が最も寄付をしているのが掲示されていました。
午後は「ヒロシ・アリスミさん（96歳）」のお宅へ。といってもヒロシさんは、クラのご自宅ではなくお嬢さんのお宅に住んでおられました。またホノルルでバーバラ川上さんから託された本も手渡せました。
しかし取材やインタビュー撮影の時に頂いたチェリモヤや柿の農園は、誰も面倒を見ていないとのこと。
ヒロシさんも寂しそうにされていました。
ホノルルではパンチボウルになりますが、マウイにも小規模ながらヴェテランズセメタリーがあります。マカワオにあるヴェテランズセメタリーに足を伸ばし、パンチボウルのような墓碑ではなく墓標に刻まれた名を見ていると、居た堪れなくなります。
この日は、ハレアカラサンセットも見ようと山頂に向かったのですが、パシフィック・ストームが来ているらしく、山頂は嵐のようでした。
諦めてカフルイの街に戻り、晩御飯を食べたあと店外に出ると満月が。
そしてそこで奇跡的なことに気づきました。
最初の日系人部隊である「第100歩兵大隊」は、その多くがトムさんも所属したハワイ・ナショナルガード（ハワイ州兵）に所属した日系二世たちで結成されました。そのハワイ・ナショナルガードは、人口の多いオアフ島は298連隊に属し、マウイやハワイ島などネイバーはすべて299連隊に属していました。
実はマウイで借りたレンタカーのナンバーが「299」だったのです。
これには全員、大きな驚きを隠せませんでした。
マウイマジックです。
"A tour to meet a Nisei, and to interchange with a Japanese-American" finished the first time.
It seemed to become the very dense tour and introduces Maui edition this time.
On February 10, Matsumoto and the four participants gathered at Honolulu Airport.
This time, it was only female, but age ranges from 40s, 50s, 60s.
But I met with each other for the first time soon. Does the atmosphere of Hawaii do so?
First place to visit Maui.
We arrived at Kahului airport, and went to Nisei Veterans Memorial Center with Kansha preschool aiming for support exchange.
At the Education Center, staff welcomed us and visited Kansha Preschool and exchange opinions with Director Charlene. Even at Adult Day Care on the premises senior were waiting for our arrival.
One of them, "Kazuto Takahashi" who was 100 years old was there.
Mr. Kazuto, who had parents from Fukushima and was born in Paia, also engaged in sugarcane labor in the same way and continued a tough life.
However, Mr. Kazuto's words had Nisei's Pidgin.
"I worked at the first plantation and moved to Bambai, another more affordable plantation" Bambai ("later").
After leaving NVMC, I went to Tom Yamada (102 years old)'s home with the oldest age of this tour.
We bought the tuna and brought it down, and when we showed it to Tom, he started thinly slicing sashimi with saying "I will cut the tuna!" Tom loves sashimi that cut thinly the tuna. Also with Tom, always smiling with his favorite champagne.
When someone from Doshisha graduated among the participants and requested Tom to "Doshisha's school song", Tom firmly finished singing to the end. This is impressive with all surprises.
Also when Misora Hibari visited the Maui performance, Tom told Maui.
Tom, who is involved in a very important person for Japan, such as interpreters of Gen. Hideki Tojo and a guide to Hibari Misora.
We me to the Arakawa Mayor and handed him the autograph letter which We kept for the Mayor of Miyakojima afterwards.
Both a Mayor and his wife spoke of the words of the thanks for a Nisei and the Issei and were nodded when they told you, Matsumoto "It was Okagesama de".
11th only slightly slowly.
When she observed the swap meet performed in the morning in Maui community college and visited the shop of the lei which one of the participants always purchased, senior was Nisei what.
An older brother seemed to be an MIS interpreter soldier, and "Asano Suizu" (age lapse of memory) could come to Maui for work of the master in the 1970s and seemed to just retire. However, after knitting a very wonderful lei, and purchasing it, and sprinkling it to a neck; "Oh! It's a wonderful lei! Where did you purchase it?" from other visitors asked us about 6-7 times?
Then, We went to Maui Shrine nearby. The daughter of "Torako Arine chief priest" (age at death 100) who passed away three years ago had she guide not only the front shrine but also the main shrine.
When we maintained a fence around a shrine of Maui Shrine, it was posted on company Arisumi Brothers company" of Hiroshi Arisumi to meet next that we contributed it most.
In the afternoon to the home of "Hiroshi Arisumi-san (96)". Hiroshi-san lived in the home of the daughter not his home of Kula, though. I also handed over the book entrusted by Barbara Kawakami-san in Honolulu.
In the farm of cherimoya and the persimmon which he had at the time of coverage and interview photography, nobody seems to take care.
Hiroshi-san was made lonely. It becomes the punch bowl in Honolulu, but there is Veterans Cemetary although being small in Maui.
When we extend means of transportation to Veterans Cemetary in Makawao and watch the name engraved into a gravepost not the gravestone such as the punch bowl, I become unable to stay.
The Haleakala sunset faced the mountaintop on that day to look, but Pacific storm seemed to be here, and the mountaintop was like the storm.
When give it up, and come back to the town of Kahului, and appear outside the restaurant which ate dinner more; a full moon. And I noticed a miraculous thing there. "The 100th infantry battalion" which was a first Japanese-American Nisei corps was formed in Niseis who belonged to Hawaii National guard that most belonged to as for Tom.
As for the Hawaii National guard, populous Oahu belonged to 298 regiments, and all Neighbor Island including Maui and Hawaii Island belonged to 299 regiments.
In fact, the number of the rent-a-car which we borrowed in Maui was "299".
We was big surprise from this.
It is Maui magic.
