あまりにも面白いやり取りだったのでご紹介します。

われわれはJimmy Walesの宣伝作戦に釣られて「Googleをやっつけるような人力検索エンジン」の登場を1年も待った 。今夜（米国時間1/6）、その検索エンジンがalpha.search.wikia.com で公開された。しかし、なんと、これまでレビューしてきたなかで最大級に失望させられるサービスと判明した。ざっくりいうと、wikia search はすげー期待されてたけど、
全く期待はずれだよね。という内容です。
そもそも wikia search は人手によって検索結果が改良さるという
検索エンジンのプロジェクトのこと。
実際これがどんな風に見られていたかはFastCompanyという
雑誌の表紙が端的にあらわしています。

この記事の面白いところは、wiki のジミーその人がコメントをしていることです。
以下抜粋。
確かに。これは納得。It’s a project to *build* a search engine, not a search engine.We’ve been telling everyone that constantly. I’m sorry Michael’sdisappointed, but having said that, we didn’t build it for him, but forpeople who think that openness, transparency, and participation aremore important than slick releases.
これは"検索エンジン”のプロジェクトではなく、"検索エンジンを作る”プロジェクトです。

という感じですが、そういってきたとおり、我々が作ったのはすばやいリリースよりも、オープンさや透明性を重んじる人達のために行うプロジェクトです。

そして、これに対するTechcrunch の編集人 micheal のコメントも振るっています。
で、ここでいろいろチャチャが入りつつ、マイケル氏が「いや、でも問題はあまりにJimmy - to be fair, it’s been you from the start that talked about beating Google:

And the real problem here isn’t that the search sucks. That’s besidethe point. It’s that you haven’t launched any of the tools that canallow humans to make it better. Until you do, the engine can’t get anybetter than it is now.
何よりも問題のは、検索結果のことではありません。それを除いても、人力で検索結果を改良するための機能が全然スタートしていないということです。
スタートさせないと、検索結果は全然良くならないですよ。

これに対してジミー氏からコメント。
Actually, Michael, I told every single reporter I talked to thatthis is not a google killer at this point. Of course, you didn’t askfor an interview, so I understand that you didn’t know that.

I have been trying pretty hard to DAMPEN the hype because I knewpeople like you would beat me up. Well, here it is, you beat me up. Myprediction is right.

Jimmy - I did ask Gil, who’s the CEO of the company, for aninterview, and was able to snatch a couple of minutes from him over theweekend (thus my comments from him in the post). It’s good that youhave been trying to dampen the hype, but it’s important to rememberthat it was you who created the hype in the first place.
実際、インタビューはGil(wikia CEO)に申し込んだんですよ。それで2分くらい時間もらえました。
記事中にも彼のコメントがありますよね。過剰な期待感を正そうとしていたのはいいことですよね。ただ、その期待感の大元はあなただって覚えておくべきですよ(^∇^)
Anyway, I’m sure you guys will be heads down in creating the newfunctionality, and I look forward to seeing it. We’ve generally beenpro-wikia. Hopefully we’ll get back to that trend eventually.
ともあれ、新しい機能をあなたたちは作るのでしょうし、私はそれを期待してます。
And an aside - Gil is actually a good friend as well, and he’sclearly going to be a little pissed about this post. My guess is hestarts talking to me again mid-2008.

検索結果を人手にゆだねるというのは、特にDigg のようなスパム排除のための
bury には威力を発揮するのかなと思ったり。
