With traffic tie-ups at the intersection of Old Justin Road and U.S. Highway 377 as cars make trips to and from the Argyle Intermediate School, residents are asking when a traffic light will be installed.
Before one can be put in, specific requirements must be met, according to the Argyle Police Department. These requirements are called warrant studies, which are performed by the Texas Department of Transportation.
The warrant studies include an eight-hour study of traffic volume at the intersection, a four-hour study of the traffic volume, a study of when there is the most traffic, the number of pedestrians using the intersection, the practicability of coordinating the traffic lights along U.S. 377, the number of accidents at the intersection, and the traffic flow on U.S. 377.
“Most people in Argyle are familiar with the new traffic light at the U.S. Highway 377 and Harpole intersection,” Argyle Police Chief Tom Tackett said. “That light is the result of over five years of warrant studies along with a traffic plan suggested by a traffic engineer to reroute traffic in the school parking lot.”
He went on to say that Old Justin Road looked as if it would be a likely candidate for a signal light, but it only meets the peak-hour traffic volumes. In the last signal light study, it did suggest left turn lanes be added at the intersection to improve the traffic flow.
The Argyle Police Department monitors the intersections and requests warrant studies, but only peak-hour traffic warrants meet the requirement at nearly all of the intersections because of the minor amount, less than 1,000 trips per day, of traffic feeding from the roads onto U.S. 377.
“TxDot is still working on the final plans for the widening of U.S. Highway 377 and that process is estimated to start in the next three to five years. Until improvements are made, it is incumbent upon all of us to be patient and drive safely,” Tackett said.

School plays host to dads, discusses program
“Donuts with Dad” was held at Hilltop Elementary School on Friday. The students invited their fathers or father figures to enjoy doughnuts with them and meet their teachers and friends. After the students adjourned to class, Hilltop counselor Michael Ball spoke to the men about enrolling in the Watch D.OG.S. program.
On its website, the nationally recognized, nonprofit organization Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) is identified as the involvement of fathers or father figures. The program, under the direction of the National Center for Fathering, was created to encourage dads, grandfathers, uncles and other father figures to become more involved in the schools.
The men serve as positive male role models while adding to the school’s security. The volunteers commit to serving at least one full school day each year. On their day of participation, Watch D.O.G.S report to the school office wearing their Watch D.O.G.S. T-shirt, so that they are easily identified.
Last fall, Hilltop Elementary and Argyle Intermediate School began the Watch D.O.G.S. program at a kickoff in November, when the fathers or father figures became involved with the children throughout the school day in such activities as greeting students when they entered the school, reading to students, displaying flash cards, doing volunteer work in the library, resource room, and in physical education classes and having the physical presence of being engaged in student activities.
“I am pleased to report that we already have 81 people registered to serve,” said Ball, who started the program and has worked out a schedule for each day of the week for volunteers to follow. For more information, visit the Hilltop Watch D.O.G.S. Website at

Seaman Schepps, known as “America’s Court Jeweler,” was born in New York in 1881. Eventually, he made his way to Los Angeles, where he opened his first shop in 1904. In 1921, Schepps returned to Manhattan, where he continued to design jewelry until his death in 1972.
From the 1930s to the 1960s, when Schepps was at the height of his career, he counted many stars of stage, screen and the society pages as clients. They appreciated his bold and colorful creations, many of which feature natural materials such as seashells and exotic woods.
Among his most famous customers were Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli, the Duchess of Windsor, Doris Duke, Jinx Falkenburg, Rosalind Russell and Katharine Hepburn.
To mark the 110th anniversary of its founding, the Seaman Schepps company has organized an exhibition, Icons & Signatures, that displays 55 vintage pieces from the firm’s archival collection. Featured are some spectacular bracelets, brooches, earrings, necklaces and other items.
The exhibit opens Monday and will be on view through March 1 at the Seaman Schepps boutique, 237A Worth Ave. Call 802-4410 for information.

Making the “seen” — Shep and Ian Murray, who founded Vineyard Vines — a men’s, women’s and children’s apparel and accessories company in Martha’s Vineyard, Mass. — in 1998, were in town Tuesday to celebrate the opening of their Worth Avenue store, their third in Florida.
The Murrays had been looking to open a Palm Beach store for several years and finally found a space they liked, at 305 Worth Ave. With more than 3,000 square feet, it’s large enough to display the complete Vineyard Vines collection, which began with a selection of colorful whale-logo men’s neckties and has grown into an extensive line best described as “casual prep.”

Power shopping — The seventh edition of the Posh Palm Beach designer clothing and accessories sale runs Thursday through Saturday at the Lake Pavilion, 101 S. Flagler Drive, West Palm Beach.
The event, a benefit for the Lighthouse International Guild, which aids vision-impaired people throughout the country, offers thousands of gently used and new designer clothing items and accessories for women and men. The donations are from individuals and businesses in Palm Beach and the surrounding area.
“This year, in addition to a wonderful assortment of apparel from some of the most coveted international labels, we have a very good selection of costume jewelry and a greater number of women’s shoes in a range of sizes,” said Barbara Rogoff, director of the sale. “And we’re still accepting donations, as we do throughout the year.”

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 7 -- It started out as a hobby. Nurul Syazana Sukiman was making clothes for her niece but soon she was receiving inquiries about the adorable outfits. Whimsigirl is a refreshing take on children’s wear, infused with traditional and cultural elements. Her collection includes a Baju Melayu romper for example and a Baju Kurung top made with modern fabric.

“I started in 2010 working from home. Back then, our clothes were seasonal so we only made them for Hari Raya,” said Syazana, 29. Eventually, she started participating in bazaars in 2012, joining other handcrafters at Urban Bazaar and Hello Deer on a regular basis.

The name Whimsigirl is actually Syazana’s nickname. She didn’t want to name her line of clothes after her own name so she used Whimsigirl. Despite the name, the clothes are not for girls only.

“We try not to associate gender with clothes. Most of our clothes are unisex. Some parents like their girls wearing the Baju Melayu romper and there was one parent who didn’t mind her son wearing the colour purple,” said Syazana.

Interestingly, Syazana taught herself how to sew when she came back from Melbourne after her studies. She did architecture but she had a passion for fashion design, specifically children’s wear. She practised on her niece and eventually after she gave birth to a baby boy in 2011, she also started making clothes for him.

“I guess I found my other calling! I learned through buying sewing books. On my 24th birthday, I bought myself a sewing machine. It’s all just practice. At first I didn’t get the hang of it but I kept trying,” she said.

Syazana’s mother does not sew very often but her grandmother used to make clothes for her mother and aunts. “Maybe that’s how I got the sewing gene,” said Syazana.

At a young age, Syazana loved collecting fabric all over the world but she didn’t know what to do with them. One day, she went shopping for her niece and realised that most of the children’s wear looked dated, especially the Baju Kurung and Baju Melayu that were available.

She then experimented with her collection of fabric and people started taking notice of her work. She did a trial run in 2011 to sell the clothes she made and received positive feedback.

“I use American cotton for the clothes and a lot of people liked and preferred the modern cloth.”
