Heather McNamara was due to be discharged from the New York-Presbyterian children's hospital in Manhattan on Tuesday after recovering from her 23-hour operation more than a month ago.

A team of surgeons led by Tomoaki Kato took out and chilled Heather's stomach, pancreas, spleen, liver, and small and large intestines in the same way as if they were being prepared for a transplant.

The doctors were then able to get at a life-threatening cancer the size of a cricket ball which had developed in her abdomen.
加藤医者は、それから、ヘザーちゃんの腹部で発達したクリケットボールの寸法致命的なガンを取ることができましした。
The cancer had already spread into the girls's stomach, spleen and pancreas, none of which could be saved.
ガンは女の子の胃、鬱憤とすい臓にすでに蔓延しました。そのすべては もう生かすことができない 内臓でした。
The team substituted a pouch made from intestinal tissue for her stomach. Without a pancreas, Heather will be a diabetic while the loss of her spleen will make her more prone to infections, but she will be able to eat normal food.
チームは、ヘザーちゃんの胃のために腸の薄紙から作られた袋の代替をつくりました。すい臓なしで、ヘザーちゃんは糖尿病患者状態で、脾臓の喪失によりヘザーちゃんは より感染症の傾向があるようになっていますが、通常の食物を食べることができます。
Mr Kato, a transplant specialist, said the surgery had been so hazardous that the girl's father had been prepared for surgery in case they were unable to save her liver and needed to use his.
加藤医師（移植スペシャリスト）は、手術でヘザーちゃんの肝臓を保存することができなくて、ヘザーちゃんのお父さん肝臓を使う必要があった場合に備えて お父さんの手術の準備もされていたくらい危険のものだったと述べました。
The surgeon conducted the only other operation of its kind last year in Miami, Florida. The patient, a 62-year-old woman was doing well, he said.

While colleagues praised his courage in performing the operation, he admitted he had been "very nervous".

He told : "Afterwards, I was about to collapse. I slept for five or six hours on a couch."

Heather's parents live in Long Island, New York. Her father, Joseph, said she was "doing fantastic".
