Amazake is a traditional Japanese
fermented drink and made with
rice and rice malt.
It literally means "sweet (ama 甘)"
and "liquor (sake 酒)".
The history of amazake goes back to
the Kofun period (250 to 538 AD).
In the Edo period it was consumed
during the hot summer months
to prevent summer fatigue.
These days Amazake is called
the "IV drip to drink (nomu tenteki)",
since it's so rich in nutrients.
