3:Experiences in last summer #1
After taking physics class at [XXX] last Summer 1, I came back to my country, Japan. It was second time to return there since I've been in the U.S. Though I decided to come back there before beginning of Summer 1, I didn't have any plan to do. I came back just because my family, specially my grandparents asked me to do so. I couldn't refuse their request since they always care about me, and they really liked to see me. Then I decided to go Japan, but I had a bitter feeling with returning home.
Last winter, after the 2003 Fall, I also came back to Japan to see my family and friends. What I did at that time is only hanging out with my friends or spending time with my family. I just played all the time. I didn't study at all, and just spent money for a companionship. At that time, I really enjoyed it, but when I looked these days back after coming to the U.S. again, I found that I gained nothing from these days. On the contrary, I just wasted my times and money. I don't think playing with friends or spending time with family is trifling, these times are rather valuable and important. However, only doing such lifestyle didn't bring me any special experience. Due to this bitter experience, I didn't feel good to return to Japan.
To make summer vacation beneficial to me, I decided to get a part-time job. I was anxious about getting jobs since I'd never got part-time jobs, and the term I could work was limited, only a month. I called the karaoke-shop first, and clerk asked me to come to the shop with curriculum vitae. I went there with fixed appearance, even I cut my hair for the interview. When I got the shop, the clerk came to see me. I surprised that he had really long hair and looked like a school kid. He asked me some questions, and said "you can be able to work here." Also he said he would call me if his boss decide to hire me. I waited the call for two days, but it didn't come. I was depressed and couldn't believe that I wouldn't be hired. I thought I was perfect at that time, and I asked him lots of things about job. In other words, I was really motivated to get that job. "How idiot they are! How come they can refuse my request!", I thought. However, calmly thinking, I knew that most of people don't want to hire the "student" for "just a month". If I could be hired, then boss might not be a smart. Anyway, I couldn't get a job at the time, and I decided to challenge another company.
What I learned from this experience is that what companies need does not always match with what workers want to. Companies have their own view to hire workers. They care how long worker can be on the job, what kind of job worker had before, how worker will be beneficial to them, and so on. Workers care how much they can earn, how many holidays they can get, what can they gain from the job, and so on. Since workers and companies have different view, they need to compromise at some points. In my case, I chose jobs because of the wage and shift. I guess this was not good term for the company to hire a person only a month. To sum up, living in the capitalism requires concessions which both workers and companies need to make. I was silly at that time.
