In Japan, they say "You can't conceal your nature and nurture when you eat grilled fish." You could translate the saying into many ways. If one eats only small part, leaving bony parts and skin of the fish, that means s/he was brought up in the lap of luxury. Or, if one clears up her/his plate very well, leaving barely the main bone on the plate, that could show her/his good table manner (that s/he was well disciplined). I do not know which one is more generally-accepted translation, but I am definitely the one who leaves the plate clean. For the dead fish, I believe that is the only way I can show my gratitude.
