My mother-in-law cooks so well, and she often invites us over for a huge feast. Yesterday, she made soysauce-flavored chiken rice with cooked burdock, carrot, mushroom, lotus root, konyaku(a gelatinous food made from devil's-tongue starch) and deep fried tofu. On tyipical Japanese tables, we usually have plain rice, okazu (small dishes to go along with rice), and miso soup. Having them alternately is considered a good manner. But chiken rice of this kind does not need okazu. I decided to make a plain egg roll and other okazu that would not appeal too much in the lunchbox. Today's main menu is mom's rice.
Today's nekoben:
Mom's chiken rice
rolled egg
minced and steamed fish with cheese and spinach
black bean
Dessert: orange
