「持って生まれたもの、すなわち個性だ」。ヨーロッパ最大の音楽の祭典、ユーロビジョン・ソング・コンテストで今年優勝したイタリアのロック・バンド、マネスキンについての記事から。something you are born withは文字通りの意味だが、よく使われる表現。生まれつきの資質や能力のことだ。
持って生まれた、を辞書で引くと、naturalやinnateと出てくるが、上記の言い回しで簡単に表現できる。ちなみにLongman Dictionary of Contemporary Englishでinnateを引くと、an innate quality or ability is something you are born withとの定義が載っている。後天的に身に付けたもの（技術など）はsomething you develop。
