先日ニューヨークから日本に一時帰国した際、トルコのイスタンブールにて乗り継ぎをしたのですが、乗り継ぎ時間が10時間半あったので、街中を観光してきました。
10時間半の観光なので、現金を下ろすかどうか迷ったのですが、どのネット記事にも多少の現金はあった方が良いと書いてあったので、約1000円分だけキャッシングすることにしました。この時は1リラ＝5円ほどでしたので、200リラを入手しました。実際はほとんどのレストランや主要な観光スポット、公共交通機関の券売機ではカードを使うことができたので、街中では最後まで使うタイミングがなく、帰りに空港でお土産か軽食を買うときに使おうと思っていました。
しかし、空港についてびっくり！なんと、リラを扱っているお店がほとんどないんですね。ほとんどがユーロ表示でした。ギリギリ、制限エリア内のマクドナルドだけリラを扱っていたので200リラで買えるものをみたら、アイスティーやスプライトなどのドリンクのみ・・・。「普通のドリンクに1000円払うのは嫌だ」と思い、結局現金は今も大切にとってあります。後で調べて分かったのですが、リラは今大暴落中のようですね。今まで20カ国以上周っていて初めての経験だったので、驚きましたが、通貨が不安定だとこのような事態が起きるのですね。みなさん、トルコに行ったら街中でキャッシュを使い切りましょう。

The other day, When I went back to Japan from New York temporarily, I transferred in Istanbul, Turkey. I had 10 and a half hours of layover time, so I went sightseeing. Because It was just for 10 and a half hours that I would stay there, I was not sure if I withdraw cash or not, but most of online articles say that tourists would be better to have a little cash, so I decided to cash out only about 1000 yen. I got 200 lira because 1 lira cost about 5 yen then. In fact, I was able to use my credit card when I paid for restaurants, main tourist spots, and tickets for public transportation. I didn't pay by cash while I was downtown, I was thinking of using cash to buy some souvenirs or meals at the airport.
However, It was surprising that there were few stores that dealt with lira at the airport. Most of the stores showed the price in Euros. As I found that only McDonald's in the limited area dealt with lira, I looked for the items that I was able to buy with 200 lira, but Unfortunately, It was only drinks like iced tea or Sprite. I didn't want to pay 1000 yen for a normal drink, so I decided to keep it. Afterward, I looked into it and found out that the lira seems to be in a major decline right now. Since it was my first experience while I was visiting 20 countries, it made me surprised. This happens when the currency is unstable. I recommend using the lira in the city, not in the airport.
