前にロサンゼルスに住んでいる友達にニューヨークの人のイメージを聞いたことがあって、彼女は失礼な人が多いイメージだと言っていました。フィリピン人の英会話の先生も同じイメージを持っていました。私はニューヨークに来る前は現地人に関する情報があまりなかったので、実際に来てみたら思ったよりフレンドリーではない人が多くて驚きました。東京の人も田舎に比べたら冷たい人が多いけど、店員さんは基本的にちゃんとしてるし、接客は丁寧ですよね。もちろんNYでも一部の店員さんはとてもフレンドリーで人種関係なく接してくれる方もいますが、やはり大体のサービスレベルは、チップをあげているにもかかわらず期待外れなことが多いです。日本人は給料が低いしチップもらえないのに一定のサービスレベルが維持されていて、逆に不思議に思います。
I asked an American friend who lives in LA What is the impression of people in NY before. She said most people in NY are rude, and one of my Philipino people said the same thing. Since I didn't have any idea of New Yorkers before I came here, I was surprised they are so cold. I think people in Tokyo are also cold, but shop clerks are very polite and disciplined. Of course, some shop clerks are very friendly and helpful, but the quality of their services is basically worse than that of my expectation even though they get tips from customers. It's mysterious that the Japanese keep high-quality services even if they don't get much money.
