世にも有名な 映画『イージーライダー』。 もう、３０数年前―４０年近く前の作品。
先日 機会を得て、ようやく観ることができた。
荒野を駆ける２台のイージーライダー。 言わずもがな キャプテン・アメリカ と ビリー のふたり。
オートバイに乗る人でなくても 引き込まれるきれいな映像だ。
なるほど、伝説のように語られる映画だと納得してしまう。
さて、
作品中での会話(ビリーと道中出会うジョージの)。
３０数年経った今の、今なおの“保守国家＝合衆国”を････“合衆国式の自由”を、
痛烈に批判するような遣り取りがある。
蛇足ではあるが、和訳を添えてみよう。
ジョージ You know, this used to be a helluva good country.
I can't understand what's gone wrong with it.
（アメリカはいい国だった。どうなっちまったんだ。）
ビリー Huh. Man, everybody got chicken, that's what happened, man.
Hey, we can't even get into like, uh, second-rate hotel,
I mean, a second-rate motel.
You dig? They think we're gonna cut their throat or something, man.
They're scared, man.
（臆病になったのさ。２流のモーテルさえ泊まらせないんだ。俺達が、喉でも掻っ切ると思ってんのさ。
奴らはビビってやがるんだ。）
ジョージ Oh, they're not scared of you.
They're scared of what you represent to 'em.
（彼らは君たちを恐れたりなんかしてないよ。君達が象徴するものが怖いのさ。）
ビリー Hey man. All we represent to them, man, is somebody needs a haircut.
（長髪が目障りなだけさ。）
ジョージ Oh no. What you represent to them is freedom.
（いいや。君たちに自由を見るのさ。）
ビリー What the hell's wrong with freedom, man? That's what it's all about.
（自由のどこが悪いんだ。それが肝心なところじゃないか。）
ジョージ Oh yeah, that's right, that's what it's all about, all right.
But talkin' about it and bein' it - that's two different things.
I mean, it's real hard to be free when you are bought and sold in the
marketplace.
'Course, don't ever tell anybody that they're not free
'cause then they're gonna get real busy killin'and maimin'
to prove to you that they are.
Oh yeah, they're gonna talk to you, and talk to you,
and talk to you about individual freedom,
but they see a free individual, it's gonna scare 'em.

ジョージ No, it makes 'em dangerous.
（いいや、非情に危険だ。）

この自由の証明のために いったいどれだけの戦争をし、人を殺すんだろう
太平洋戦争後の、、、冷戦終息後のアメリカは なににビビッて、なにをしてきた？
