スコットランド４番目の都市・ダンディー。この街の出身であるゲイリー・クラークとその弟キット・クラーク、そしてゲッド・グライムスの３人のメンバーで結成されたのがダニー・ウィルソンである。
フランク・シナトラの主演映画『Meet Danny Wilson』からグループ名を拝借したというこのバンドは、1987年のデビュー・シングル「Mary's Prayer」が英米で大ヒット（UKチャートでは2位）を記録したことで、新しい時代をになうバンドのひとつとして一躍注目を集めることになった。
この当時、続々とシーンに登場してきた"スティーリー・ダン・フォロワー"のひとつとして語られることの多い彼らだが、デビュー・アルバム『Meet Danny Wilson』で聴かれるサウンドはそれだけに留まらない多彩なものだ。とくに、ブラス・セクションやパーカッションの使い方などは、バンド名の由来からも連想できるように、映画音楽からの影響も強く感じられる非常に印象的なものになっている。
さらに、1989年発表のセカンド・アルバム『Be Bop Mop Top』は、そんなサウンド・アプローチをより追求したドリーミーなポップ・センスあふれる傑作アルバムで、この年の 「最優秀アルバム」と呼ぶ人も多かった。
しかし、結局バンドはこの2枚のオリジナル・アルバムを残して惜しくも解散。メンバーは現在、それぞれに新たにバンドを結成したり、ソロのミュージシャンとして活動を続けてる。
