不自然だと思われていた
「the elfin knicht」
・・・の部分は
カットされていて、
リフレインも、
「Oure the hills and far awa」
・・・と、
微妙に変わっています。
再構成前のキンロックの
原稿では、
「Ours the hills and far awa」
・・・でした。
ちなみに。
スコットランドの
ベルおばあちゃんの歌では、
「Ower the hills a' far awa」
・・・でした。
「Ours」ですと、
「我々の丘は遠くに」
・・・という意味になるかな？
「Oure」や「Ower」ですと、
それはきっと、
「Over」のことだろうと
なんとなく解りますので。
これらは。
「Over the Hills and far away」
意味は、
「丘をこえて遠くへ」
・・・になります。
そしてこの、
「Over the Hills and far away」
・・・という言い回しは。
昔から
とてもポピュラーなもの
だったようで。
こういうタイトルの
イギリスの有名な民謡も
あるそうです。

トマス・ダーフィーは、
イギリスの劇作家であり
詩人でもあった人でした。
「Jockey's Lamentation」は、
1706 年に
『Wit And Mirth: Pills To Purge Melancholy』
・・・の4巻で初めて発表されたようです。
Jockey met with Jenny fair
Betwixt the dawning and the Day,
And Jockey now is full of Care,
For Jenny stole his heart away:
Altho' she promised to be true;
Yet she, alas, has prov'd unkind,
That which do make pour Jenny rue,

途中省略しました。

これは、
ジェニーという美しい娘に
恋をした騎手が。
彼女に思いが届かなくて
グチグチ言っている歌です
この歌詞の中で気になったのは
やはり、
「fair」
・・・という言葉で。
最初は、
「Jenny fair」
（美しいジェニー）
・・・として
使われていますが。
次には、
「Scotland fair」
・・・となっていて。
これもきっと韻を踏むために
考えだされたものだったの
でしょうけれども。
その意味は、
「麗しのスコットランド」
・・・とも、
「スコットランドの市場」
・・・ともとれる
歌詞である気がするので。
こういうところからも。
やはり、
『Scarborough Fair』に
出てくる「fair」という
言葉は。
元来は「麗しい」の
意味で使われていたっぽい
気がしてしまいます。
それがこうやって、
「韻を踏むため」とか。
言葉遊びとして、
市場としての「Fair」が
持ち出され。
いつしか「市」としての
「fair」のほうが
定着してしまった。
・・・みたいな
それから、
「The Wind has blown my Plad away」
（風が私のプレイドを吹き飛ばした）
・・・が、途中で、
「That Jenny stole my Heart away」
（ジェニーが私のハートを盗んでいった）
・・・に変わっているところが、
なんとも面白いなぁと
思いました。
トマス・ダーフィーは。
もともとの、
『妖精の騎士』のバラッドは
知っていたのでしょうし。
おそらく、
その歌の意味も。
解っていたのだろうと
思います

・・・というリフレインは、
古いバラッドの
『妖精の騎士』からのパクリ。
・・・だということが、
明らかに見て取れますが。
以前からある歌の、
歌詞やメロディーを
そのまま転用することは。
当時は、
ごくごく普通のこと
だったそうです。
転用される歌は、
その時人気があったり
流行ったりしている歌だった
ようなので。
おそらく、
『妖精の騎士』
・・・というバラッドは。
当時もとても
ポピュラーなもの
だったのでしょう。
そしてこの、
『Jockey's Lamentation』も。
その後、
様々なところで転用されたのだそうで。
ウィキによると、
1706年には、
George Farquharの人気劇、
・・・に採用されたようです。

これらの元歌となった
ダーフィーの
『Jockey's Lamentation』は、
1787年になると、
『O'er The Hills And Far Away』
・・・というタイトルに変わり。
『the first Volume of the Scots Musical Museum』
・・・の第 1 巻の中に、
再び掲載されたようです。

・・・という勇ましい歌に
なっていたりします

可哀想な騎手は。
のちに童謡の中で、
「笛吹きトム」に
変わっていきました。
シェイクスピア研究で有名な
1841年に出した
『Nursery Rhymes of England』
・・・の中に「 CXIII」として
この歌を掲載したようですが。
笛吹きトムに変わった
このヴァージョンは、
童謡としてその後もずっと、
歌い続けられていきました。

変わっていき・・・

さらに現代版は。
笛吹の息子のトムが
豚を盗んで、
お父さんに怒られる歌に
なっていました

すっかり別物になっていますね
