ブルー・ボネットをかぶった老人】
チャイルドの集めた
『妖精の騎士』には、
手稿の中にあった歌が
いくつかありました。
（1797-1835）
スコットランドのグラスゴーで
生まれたマザウェルは、
保安官代理の仕事をしつつ、
その余暇を使って地元に伝わる
バラッドを収集していたそうです。
政治活動にも
熱心だったよう。
チャイルドの
『妖精の騎士』では、
・・・が、
マザウェルの手稿からの
歌のようです。

その中の
「ヴァージョンI」は。
John McWhinnieという人が
マザウェルに伝えたものでした。
このマクウィニーさんは、
スコットランドのエアシャーにある
「グリーン」というニュータウンの
炭鉱夫だったそうです。
けれども、
マクウィニーさんが伝えたのは
第３～第15スタンザのみで。
第１と第２スタンザは、
あとから付け加えられた
もののようです。
1827年に、
Thomas Macqueenという人が
マクウィニーさんの歌を
記録したようなのですが。
彼はその二年後に、
この歌の最初の二つのスタンザの
歌詞を発見したのだそうです。
その情報源は、
スコットランドの小さな町、
キルバーニーにいた、
Mary O'Meallyという
人だそうです。
ジョン・マクウィニーさんが
歌っていた３～15スタンザの歌詞と。
のちに、
トーマス・マックィーンが見つけた
１と２スタンザの歌詞が。
本当に同じ歌の歌詞だったか
どうかというのは。
確かめようがありませんが。
そのふたつを、
マザウェルが自分の手稿の中で
ひとつに統合したようです。

Hee ba and balou ba,
Wi his blue bonnet in his ban.

「true love of mine」
・・・ではなく、
「And the wind has blown my plaid awa」
・・・なところが、
スコットランドっぽいですし。
どこか、
古い歌であるような
印象も受けました。
そしてこの歌では、
「Hee ba and balou ba」
・・・という、
少し珍しいリフレインが
使われています。
もしかすると。
マクウィニーさんの歌と、
マックイーンが発見した歌詞の、
そのリフレインの部分が
共通していたことで。
マザウェルはそのふたつを
統合してしまったのかも
しれませんね。
それにしても。
マクウィニーとか
マックイーンとか。
ちょっとややこしい
あとから付け足された部分ですが。

思いのままに音楽を楽しんでいる
レディが丘の上にいて。
そこに、
青いボンネットをかぶった
老人がやってきた。
・・・という背景に
なっています。
英語がまた、
いろいろ難しいのですが
「wonned」って、
「won」（winの過去形）と
考えてもいいのでしょうか？
だとすると、
このレディはその老人に
勝利したようなので。
そう捉えるとこの歌もまた、
ふたりの機知の競い合い。
・・・ということに
なるのだろうと思います。
けれども。
「妖精の騎士と若い乙女」とか、
「男女」のような。
どこかに恋愛を思わせるような。
そんな雰囲気はここにはなくて。
相手は「老人」で。
しかも、
「auld, auld man」
（おそらく、old old man）
・・・という、
ものすごく年を取った人で。
その人相手に、
機知を戦わせなくてはならない
シチュエーションって。
なんだかそこには。
「危険」
・・・という
イメージが湧いてきます
負けたら、
何かを奪われてしまう。
・・・みたいな。

また、
「ボンネット」というと。
メルヘンな女の子が
かぶっているヒラヒラの帽子とか。
あとは赤ちゃんがかぶる
可愛い帽子が浮かんできて。
そんなのを被った老人って？
・・・と、
ますます怪しい感じが
してしまったのですが
調べてみたら、
また面白いことが解りました。
「blue bonnet」というのは。
スコットランドの男性が
よく被っている、
あのベレー帽みたいな
帽子のことを言うようです
こうして見ると。
スコットランドの
民族衣装って。
なんだかすごく
かっこいいですね
私の中の
キルトのイメージは。
これまではずっと、
バレエの
『ラ・シルフィード』の
ジェームズのイメージが
強かったのですが。
『スカボロー・フェア』について
調べているうちに。
どんどん、
イメージが変わってきました。
やっぱり。
本場のものは素敵です

こんなことを言うのも
なんですが。
年齢を重ねると。
いろいろなものが、
「二番煎じ」「三番煎じ」に
感じるようになっていき。
『スカボロー・フェア』も、
このくらいの時代のものに
なってくると。
「あぁ、こういうの、
前にもあったなぁ」と。
そんな風に聴こえるように
なってきました
