今回のおばあちゃんは、
ジョージア州のDooly County
出身の人らしいです。
ここは、
大陸の東ですね。
おばあちゃんは、
Mrs. Georgia Ann Griffin
という人で。
この録音は、
John Avery Lomaxによって、
1937年に録音されたもの。
ジョージアおばあちゃんは、
1863年にジョージア州の
Dooly Countyに生まれ。
1877年には、
フロリダ州のNeｗberryに
引っ越したようです。
おばあちゃんはこの歌を、
バイオリン弾き（フィドル弾き）だった
父親から教えてもらったのだ
そうですが。
それはどうやら、
1877年以前のことみたいです。
おばあちゃん曰く。
「小さい頃に教えてもらって、
私は髪の毛の数よりももっとたくさん、
この歌を歌ったわ。
何度も何度も、歌っていたわ」
・・・とのこと。
ニワトリの声が、
絶妙なタイミングで入っていて
のどかな感じです

歌詞を、

ではなくて。
「Sage rosemary and thyme」
・・・と載せていました。
けれども自分には
「save」に聴こえる。
確信はないけど。
・・・とも言っていました。
私も「save」に聴こえたので
ここではいちお、
そっちにしておきました。
意味は。
「ローズマリーとタイムを救って」
・・・とか、
「ローズマリーとタイムを
保存しておいて」
・・・になってしまいますが
パセリやセイボリーは、
出てきていませんが。
「save」ではなく
「sage」が正解だったら。
ここでは３つのハーブが
揃ったことになります。
セージ、ローズマリー、
そしてタイム。と
ですが、
何度聴いても私には。
「Save rosemary and thyme」
・・・と聴こえてきてしまって
本当は「sage」だったところを、
このおばあちゃんが間違えて
覚えたとか。
あるいは、フィドラーだった
お父さんが間違えていたとか。
もともと「save」だったのか。
私の耳の問題か
いろいろ考えられますが。
調べようがなく
この歌も途中から、
「Tell her」ではなくて、
「Tell him」に変わっているので。
そこに男性と女性がいることが
解りますね。
そのあたりにまだ少しだけ、
妖精の騎士と若い娘の対話。
・・・の名残りが、
残っているような気がします

（1906-1986）。
アーカンソー州の
ユーレカスプリングスの人です。
これは、
Max Hunterによって、
1958年4月14日に
録音されたものだそうです。
この歌のリフレインは、
ローズマリーとタイムだけですね。
「yondos」というのは、
「yonder」のことだそうです。
『妖精の騎士』の系統の
バラッドでは、
ある時から「Lyne」とか
「Cape Ann」のような地名が
登場してきたり。
そのうち、
「フェア（市場）」までもが
現れましたが。
古くは。
「むこうの丘」とか
「あそこの町」みたいに。
そのあたりは、
曖昧だったのでは？
・・・なんて思ったりします
それが実際にどこなのかは
あまり重要ではなかったのだろうと。
そうやって。
もともとは、
「yonder」（むこう）（あそこ）
だったものが。
いつの間にやら、
「スカボロー・フェア」になったり。
「ウィッティンガム・フェア」に
なったり。と。
場所が特定されるように
なっていきましたが。

この詩の中には、
「a muley cows horn」
・・・というものが
出てくるのですが。
この「muley cow」について、
上の動画の作成者の方が
ウィキペディアからのメモを
載せておいてくれました
ウィキによると、
家畜化された牛というものは、
もともとは「角」のある
種だったものでも。
そのうちに角が生えなく
なっていくようで。
フォークソングや民話、
あとは詩の中には、
古語の「muley」とか、
「mulley」という言葉が
よく出てくるのだそうですが、
それは、そうやって家畜化された
アイルランドのモイルド牛の
品種のことを指すのだそうです。
そして。
この「muley」「mulley」
という言葉は。
アイルランドやスコットランドで
使われていたゲール語の「maol」
および、ウェールズでの、
「moel」という言葉に由来する。
・・・とのこと。
では。
その「maol」って、
どういう意味なの？と
調べてみたら。
「ハゲている」
・・・って出てきました
けれども。
「Maol」と大文字にすると。
「奴隷」
・・・という意味も
出てきました。
ただ。
ウェールズ語のほうの、
「moel」の意味を見てみたら。
やっぱり、
「ハゲ」だったので。
おそらくこちらのほうが、
正解なのでしょうね
これが。
「角の生えない牛」
・・・の語源なのかと思うと。
なるほどなぁ。と
そんな意味を踏まえて、
この歌詞を見てみると。
「to plow it with a muley cows horn」
「モイルド牛の角で耕して」
・・・ということになるので。
これもまた。
無理難題。なんですね
そしてこの牛は、
アイルランドの牛だそうですが。
スコットランドの
『The Wind Hath Blown My Plaid Away』
・・・の中では。
角笛を吹き鳴らしていた
妖精の騎士に対して、
「あなたの角笛で耕してきて」
・・・とは言っていても、
「角の生えない牛」については
言及していませんでした。
この牛は。
いつ頃から民謡に登場するように
なったのでしょうね。

ハーブのリフレインが使われている
数少ない最近のテキストのひとつ。
・・・とのことで。
前世紀に記録された
ほとんどのテキストでは、
代わりに
「Every Rose grows merry in time」と
歌われていたり。
ハーブのリフレインも
崩れていたり。
意味不明に解釈されたものが
多かったそうなので。
ここまで綺麗に
ハーブが並んでいたものは。
マーク・アンダーソン版も
そうでしたが。
かえって、
珍しかったのかもしれません。

開発した彼らの祖先

LPを初めて観たときは、最初、
男か女か分からなくて。
なので当時、
彼女のPVをあれこれ観て、
確認してしまいました
LP『Lost On You』（2016）
そしてLPを観ていると、
連動して思い出す人がいて。
それは、歌い手の
まふまふ君です。
彼が以前。
自分の声帯は女性の声帯に
近い形をしていると
お医者さんから言われた。
・・・と話していたことが、
妙に記憶に残っています。
