オーウェン・ブラニガンが
『Whittingham Fair』の歌を
リリースしていると聞き、
動画を探していた時。
昔はこちら↓しか
見当たりませんでした。

けれどもこのジャケットには、
『Widdicombe Fair』
・・・と書いてあったので、
「？
」
・・・となり。
それでいろいろと
調べてみたところ。
ブラニガンは1950年に、
このタイトルの歌も
リリースしていたようでした。

聴いてみるとこの歌は。
「Fair」
・・・という言葉に
共通点があるだけで。
「スカボロー・フェア」とは
まったく違う歌でしたが。
なんだか面白い歌だったので、
少し調べてみました

『Widdicombe Fair』は。
デヴォンに伝わる歌だそうで。
やはり、
英国の民謡のひとつ
なのだそうです。
『Tom Pearce』
・・・とも言うそうです。
19世紀の後半ごろ。
フランク・キッドソンを
始めとする様々な人たちが。
古い民謡集めに
熱中していましたが。
これもそういった頃に
発掘された歌で。
デヴォン出身の、
・・・というコレクターによって
1910年発表されました。
（1834ー1924)
この歌に登場する、
「Widdicombe Fair」というのは
現在でもイギリスで毎年、
9月の第２火曜日に
開催されているそうです。
そこでは、
羊やポニーなどの展示や
販売があったりだとか。
田舎の工芸品や
美術品などの販売。
あとは、
地元の子供たちの運動会や、
地元民による
歌にあやかった仮装の
出し物があったりして。
とても賑やかそうな
市のようです
開催地である、
「Widecombe in the Moor」
という村は。
この歌のおかげで、
有名な観光地になっている
そうです
この歌も。
とても面白そうなので
いつか。
もっといろいろと、
調べてみたいです。

Then Friday came, and Saturday noon.

But Tom Pearce's old mare hath not trotted home,

Peter Davy, Dan'l Whiddon, Harry Hawke,
Old Uncle Tom Cobley and all,

So Tom Pearce, he got up to the top o' the hill.

And he seed his old mare down a-making her will,

So Tom Pearce’s old mare, her took sick and died.

頭に浮かんできた曲です。
多分。
「Uncle」繋がりだと
思います
David Bowie 『Uncle Arthur』（1967）
いつまでたっても
大人になれない、
アーサーおじさんの
歌です。
たしか。
デヴィッド・ボウイの
デビューアルバムに入っていた
曲だったと思います
