子供と料理をするときに、しばしば英語が出てこず携帯で調べることになります。
「ママー、ホットケーキがプツプツいってるよー」
と言われたとき。
それを英語にしたかったのですが。The hotcake is burningだと大げさだし、燃えているみたい。
‘how to make pancakes’でレシピをググって探してみると下記のような言い方をしています：
You should see bubbles form and then pop around the edges. When the bubbles at the edge of the batter pop and a hole is left that does not immediately close up, flip the cake gently.
until the bubbles on the surface have finished popping and the pancake is dry around the edges.
プツプツ＝泡＝the bubbles
なので、プツプツ言ってる、というのを、プツプツが表面に現れている、と言い換えて
The bubbles are popping!というのが適当な訳といえそう。
ひっくり返そう＝Let's flip it over.
ヘラを取ってくれる？＝Can you get a spatula?
このお玉を使って＝Using this ladle...
なども使えそう。
クッキングは楽しみながら英語の勉強になるので、子供とやるには一石二鳥なのですが、意外と自分が知らない単語や言い回しがいっぱいで、作業がしばしば中断してしまいます。クッキング英語ノートを作ってキッチンにおいておけばよいかも。
