パラグラフリーディング 第二回です。
今回は、エッセイいきます。
今回も、さっと目を通してください。When I thinｋ of my grandfather, the first thing that comes to mind is how peaceful he always seemed to be. He would sit in our living room for hours gently petting our dog, and in all the years that I knew him I never saw him get angry. According to my mother, he only got mad at her once in her whole life. When he was teaching her how to drive a car, she told me, she proceeded to slam the family's Ford into a tree, and he screamed out in anger. But that was it. Besides that, my mother told me, she never even remembered him raising his voice.
第一パラグラフ、第一文を見てみましょう。この段落のタイトルです。
When I thinｋ /of my grandfather, /the first thing/ that comes to mind/ is how peaceful /he always seemed to be.
私が思うとき／祖父のことを／最初のことは／心に浮かぶ／いかに平穏であったか／彼はいつも思われていた。
「温和な祖父の思い出」というところでしょう。
「抽象から具体」へ、第二文からは、祖父の穏やかな性格がわかるエピソードが次に語られるであろうと予想できますよね。
第二文の出だし He would で彼の習慣、第三文以降は According to my mother, で祖父の思い出が、母によって語られることがわかりますよね。
第二文
He would sit/ in our living room /for hours gently /petting our dog,/ and in all the years /that I knew him/ I never saw him get angry.
彼は座っていたものだった／居間に／何時間も穏やかに／犬を撫でながら／そして、すべての年／私が祖父を知っている／彼が怒ったのを見たことがなかった。

According to my mother, /he only got mad /at her once/ in her whole life.
私の母によると／彼は怒っただけだった／彼女に一度／彼女の一生のうち

第五、六文
But that was it. Besides that,/ my mother told me,/ she never even remembered /him raising his voice.
しかし、それっきりであった。それ以外に/母は言った/彼女は覚えてさえいなかったと/彼が毛を荒げるのを
全文を直読してきましたが、直読の切れ目は、大体わかってもらえましたか？
前置詞の前は、大体切れ目がありますが、あまり細かく切っても、意味がぶつぶつ切れる恐れもありますので、意味のまとまりを考えれば、わかってくるはずです。
