Re-examing Life in a Bollywood Dance Class
I’m starting to sweat. I can’t stop it. There’s sweat pouring down my forehead and neck. And I’m frightened. In fact, I haven’t felt this frightened in years. And the time has come. My turn. The music starts, and I have to start moving soon - in front of a bunch of people. Such is life in a Bollywood Dance class. Dancing in front of others is not only expected, it’s sort of required. I’m seriously having a reexamination of my life and career in a dance class.
music
As a math teacher, I’m constantly preaching “take risks” and “always be learning” and “don’t be afraid to make mistakes”. But for me in a Bollywood dance class, it’s a huge challenge. I really enjoy the group training and dance moves, and I need a lot more work before I can perfect anything. I guess that’s the point. You can’t go out and play college football without hours of practice. You can’t teach kids well without hours of practice, including a whole bunch of failures.
I have a lot of failures in the classroom - in front of a bunch of 14-18 year olds! And I rarely worry about them. So why is Bollywood so frightening? I keep asking this. What do I have to lose? Nothing. What do I have to gain? Fun. New acquaintances. Some new dance moves, and perhaps in some way, self-confidence. So I keep going back. And trying. Even though it’s difficult. I’ll keep trying.
Now I reflect on my students as well. Scared of math? I have a far more open, caring, and giving perspective for students today than I did yesterday. And it’s way more difficult for a teenager who dislikes math to fight through the fear and face it. So I will keep going back. And dancing. I think it is bringing me empathy in a major way. So let’s dance. It may not be pretty, but it sure is beautiful.
