Value of Money
There are so many things that have completely changed our mindset since moving to Nepal. One of them is our notion about money.
ネパールに住み始めてから、
僕たちのマインドセットが根本から変わったなあ！
と思うことが沢山ある。
その一つが「お金の価値観、概念」だ。
At our work, every month we choose how much cash we want to receive in Nepali Rupees and how much deposit to the overseas bank in USD. We spend Nepali Rupees, which is local currency, for groceries, utilities, bills, commodities, hobbies, and some leisures...etc. The money we receive ..... sometimes makes us gag. Why? Because it is so stinky and filthy!
職場では、毎月給料日になると、
給料のうちのいくらネパールルピーの現金で欲しいか、
そしていくら米ドルで海外送金したいかを決めることになっている。
こちらの現地通貨はネパールルピーで、
僕らにとっては食料品、公共料金や電話代、日用品、趣味の月謝とか、レジャー費とかに絶対必要だ。
そして現金を受け取ると、時々吐き気をもよおうすことがある。
なぜって？
それはとっても臭くて汚いから！
We have never thought about that money can be something we feel reluctant to touch. We have never thought about how we want to get rid of money as soon as possible. We never thought about money seems less valuable than the actual material ( paper).... We have hardly ever seen money with scribble on the bill ( and that is fairy often!). We have hardly ever seen the bill is almost torn or mended with scotch tape. And all these money comes from the bank!! Very interesting.
僕らはネパールで生活を始めるまで、
触りたくないお金があるなんて考えたこともなかった。
手に入れたお金を速攻手離したくなるなんて考えたこともなかった。
原材料費（紙幣の紙代）よりも価値が低そうなお金があるなんて考えたこともなかった。
紙幣になんの悪気もなく、落書きやメモ書きをしてたり（しかも、非常に頻繁にみられる）
よれよれで破れかけているお金や、
セロテープでかろうじて繋がっているお金も日常茶飯事。
そして、これらのお金は、
れっきとした銀行から直接きたお金なんだから驚くばかりだ。
本当に面白い。
My wife wears mask on the payday to distribute the money depending on the level of 'cleanliness' and 'fragrance' and she seems having fun singing a song like stinky money. We spend the least clean and most fragrant money every month. When we go to shopping, my wife and I ask each other if one of us have D-Money. D-Money means 'Dirty Money'. It doesn't sound nice in public, so we use this secret code, D-Money. So we spend those fairly quickly and positvely. When we started to see decent moeny gradually, that is the sign of it is almost payday.
僕の妻は、毎月給料日の晩になると、
マスクをしてサングラスで完全防備で、
お金の束を清潔度と芳しさ（かぐわしさ）のレベルに応じて仕分けする。
あー臭い、あー臭いと言いながらも、
歌を歌うかのように、結構楽しそうに仕分けしている。
自然と、清潔度の低いものと、香りの強いものから出費にまわされる。
なので、この月初のお金は、かなり迅速に積極的に消費されることになる。
買い物しながらも、僕と妻は「D Moneyある？」とお互いに聞きあい、財布からお金を取り出す。
D Moneyとは、Dirty Money、汚いお金、という意味ですが、
さすがに公共の場では言いにくいので暗号を遣っています。
そして、懐に残るお金が、
次第に適度に綺麗で香りがしないものになってくるにつれ、
消費の速度がやや落ち始め、
そうこうしているうちに次の給料日がやってくる。
In Nepal, we strongly feel that money is just the method of exchanging with item/service. That is different concept from where money is purpose of saving or investment in countries such as Japan, US or Singapore.... In Nepal, we feel the money is something that happens to be in our hand and eventually goes back to society, and circulating as currency.
All those experience about money is one of the precious experience that we have made in this interesting country, Nepal. Thank you so much, Nepal !
ネパールにいると
お金って所詮、
モノやサービスと交換するためにあるにすぎないんだな、と思わされる。
これって、お金が貯蓄とか投資とかの目的となっていた
日本とか、アメリカとかシンガポールとかにいた時と、
すっかり違う考え方なんだなって思う。
ネパールにいると、
お金って、たまたま回り回って僕たちの手にあるけれど
これもすぐに社会に戻って、
ぐるぐると循環し続ける通貨に過ぎないんだなって思わされる。
こういった、お金に関する貴重な経験をさせてもらえてるのも、
ネパールという面白い国に住ませてもらっているからなんだな。
