今日は時間ができたので、新宿御苑に下見に行ってきました。
Today, I had time, so I went to Shinjuku Gyoen.
なんと、みどりの日で無料開放！そもそもみどりの日なことも忘れていましたが・・・。
It was open for free due to Greenery Day! I even forgot that it was Greenery Day.
無料ガイドの方に案内してもらうために10時半に新宿門から入園。
I wanted to hear the explanation of the garden guide, so I went to Shinjuku Gate at 10:30.

ガイドはまずヒマラヤ杉から
The guide course started from Deodar cedar:
今日は気温が高かったのですが、木陰はとても涼しかったです。
Today, the temperature was quite high, but the shade of the trees was very cool.
日光がさえぎられるものありますが、木陰はそれ以外にも涼しくなる理由があるようです。
Not just that sunlight is blocked, but there are other reasons for the shade of the trees to be cooler.

木の下は日光が届かないので、草が生えていませんでした。
Under the tree, because the sunlight is blocked, there were no grass.
雷が落ちないよう、などの理由で高さを19mで止めているそうです。
The height is stopped at 19 meters to prevent lightning strikes etc.

次はモミジバスズカケノキ。
Next, London plane.
こちらは19世紀末に日本で初めて植えられた国内で最も古い歴史のある木だそうです。
明治維新後、海外から輸入された木はまず新宿御苑に植えられて実験的に育てられたそう。
This is the oldest tree in Japan, imported/planted in Japan at the end of the 19th century.
After the Meiji Restoration, trees imported from overseas were first planted in Shinjuku Gyoen and grown on an experimental basis.
新宿御苑には各種桜が10月から5月まで約半年間見られるそうなのですが、今年はあいにくすでに4月で終わってしまったそう。残念。
Various types of cherry blossoms can be seen in Shinjuku Gyoen for about six months from October to May, but unfortunately, this year they were already over in April.
そこから歩いて、シラン。
We then walked to Hyacinth orchid.
蘭は育てるのが難しい場合が多いのですが、このシランは繁殖力が強いそうです。
Orchids are often difficult to grow, but this Hyacinth orchid is said to be very fertile.
重要文化財である旧洋館休憩所（迎賓館と同じ片山東熊作）は残念ながら工事中。でも、そこから見える景色は絶景でした。
Unfortunately, the important cultural property Kyu-Gokyu-sho (by Katayama Toguma, the same architect as the State Guest House), was under construction. However, the view from there was awesome.
左側の大きな木はハルニレ。
The big tree on the left hand side is Japanese elm.
そしてユリノキ。こちらはちょうどGWが見ごろ。とってもよい蜂蜜がとれるとか。切込みのある面白い形の葉っぱ。
Then, Tulip tree. The best season to see this tree is beginning or May. You can get good honey from this flower. The shape of the leaves are amazing.
コウノキ。古代の花。古代は虫が少なく、カブトムシのようなものが多かったため、花も大きく固くなってるそう。
Japanese big leaf magnolia. Ancient flower. In ancient times there were fewer insects and some were such as beetles, so the flowers were big and stiff.
千駄ヶ谷門近くのベニバナ。バナナのような香り。
A Port wine magnolia near Sendagaya Gate. Smells like banana.
