I'd like to show you how to write the country's name in Kanji(Japanese Chinese charactor).
Our ancestor had to create new word when foreign people came to Japan.
These are based on the sound, but originally each Kanji has own meaning. So probably you will find it weird.
UK or ENGLAND… 英(excel)
SCOTLAND … 蘇(revival)
WALES … Sorry, I can't find it on my dictionary.
IRELAND … 愛(love)
Quite nice,isn't it?
NETHERLAND … 蘭(orchid)
POLTUGAL … 葡(grape)
RUSSIA … 露(dewdrop)
BELGIUM … 白(white)
POLAND … 波(wave)
Sounds good!
INDIA … 印(sign)
SPAIN … 西(west)
Not too bad.
GERMANY … 独(alone)
Sorry...
US … 米(rice)
It looks like the Union Jack.
FRANCE … 仏(Budda)
How strange!
And LONDON is 倫(moral).
Formally these are longer (ex. UK is 英吉利) but we usually use Katakana which is one of the Japanese letters (ex. UK is イギリス). It's much easier. We use just one kanji as short sign of the countries.
It's quite difficult to explain!
