先日、「優勝は絶望的か？」という内容で英作文を書きました。
調べてみると表現のバリエーションがたくさんあったので、忘れないうちにまとめておきます。
hopeless
「絶望的」
＝もう可能性はゼロに近い
・It seems hopeless for them to win the league.
彼らがリーグで優勝するのは絶望的に思える。
・At this point, their chances of winning the league title seem almost hopeless.
この時点で、リーグ優勝の可能性はほとんど絶望的に見える。
・The situation looks hopeless.
どうしようもない状況のようだ。
・My dad is hopeless at using technology.
父は機会を使うのが全然ダメ。
slim
「かなり薄い」「（可能性・確率が）低い」
＝まだ少しは可能性があるがほぼない
・Their chances of winning the league are slim.
リーグ優勝の可能性はわずかしかない。
・Their chances of survival are very slim.
彼らが生存している可能性はかなり薄い。
no real shot
「現実的な見込みがない」
＝実質的に不可能
＊shotには「発砲」「弾」などの他、「ホームラン」「試み」「注射」「勝ち目、勝つ見込み」などたくさんの意味があります
・I don’t think they have any real shot at the league title anymore.
もうリーグ優勝に現実的なチャンスはないと思う。
・Do we really have a shot at winning?
本当に勝てる見込みある？
・It’s a long shot, but we might still win the game.
可能性は低いけど、まだ試合に勝てるかもしれない
＊ここでのlongは「長い」ではなく「遠い＝実現の可能性がら離れている」という意味
out of the race
「競争や勝負から脱落する・外れる」
・After losing five games in a row, they’re out of the race for the league title.
5連敗して、もうリーグ優勝の可能性はなくなった。
・The them are practically out of the race for the pennant.
そのチームは実質的に優勝争いから脱落している。
「絶望的だ」と表現する単語はまだまだあります。
doomed：運のつきた、消える運命にある
despair：絶望、失望、落胆
など。
調べると次々と出てきて、キリがないですね
