ビリー・ジョエルがコロンビア・レコードと契約し、 第一弾としてリリースした’７３年のアルバム
『 ピアノ・マン 』 （ ビリーとしては２作目のアルバムで出世作 ）。
それからの第１弾シングルとしてリリースされたビリーの傑作曲のひとつです。
歌の内容は、 弾き語りで生計を立てていた頃のビリーの体験を元にしたもので、 全米２５位を記録しています。
ビリーの代名詞と言える代表曲で、 ２０００年代に至るまでライヴの定番曲となりました。
３拍子のリズムが心地よい楽曲で、 トラッド・フォークを思わせるようなメロディ・ラインとアレンジが、
心にしみわたる優れた作品だと思います。

コンサートのフィナーレは、 この曲でした。
日本のオーディエンスに向けて、 イントロでの ”Ｓｕｋｉｙａｋｉ” 、
歌詞の中に、 『 Ｔｏｋｙｏ 』 というワードを織り込むという、 大サービス。
ビリーのライヴでは定番となった、 サビ部分の大合唱。
