ULTRA SUEDE - IN SEARCH OF HALSTON

He was the designer of the moment who created the future of fashion, not only in America. He was at the centre of the "World of Halston", a social milieu that created the celebrities of his time, collected the already famous, and enjoyed all of it from the vantage point of his house on 63rd street, that was the epitome of modern living (and still is). Or Studio 54, the greatest night club ever, where he reigned supreme over his courtiers. The Courtiers were Liza, Elton, Bianca, Angelica, the list is endless.
How do I know? because sometimes I was there. haha. When I wasn't in Tokyo or Paris I was in New York, the "hottest" place on earth and the "coolest" person in it was Halston and of course his Halstonettes.
The Halstonettes were the group of supermodels that he worked with, played with and never went anywhere without. Two of my friends were Halstonettes, Patty Cleveland and Angelica Huston. They are a testament to their time in the funny and touching scenes that they grace in the new movie about Halston, directed by WHITNEY SUDLER SMITH entitled ULTRA SUEDE - IN SEARCH OF HALSTON.
I was privileged to watch this extraordinary documentary in L.A this time, simply because I am a very lucky girl. My best friend is Anne Goursaud and she is the producer/writer of this "feast of a fashion film" and is also the subject of my next L.A blog, by the way.
She introduced Elli-Rose and I to Whitney and we had a pre-preview look at the film from the lair of the director himself. He also reigns supreme in his huge loft in Venice, and was gracious enough to not only show us the film, but allow us to photograph and record this so special event. And special it was. I watched the film which swept me up and back to that amazing time. Some of the people in it are still with us, others sadly, like Haltson himself are gone. I laughed with Andre Leon Talley and wept with Pat Cleveland; Angelica Huston was animated and happy to remember that time, as I was. I watched my daughter Elli-Rose become completely involved in the life of a man she never knew. Later she would say to me, "He was soooo sophisticated mummy".
Halston was sophistication personified.
Born in Iowa as Roy Halston Frowick, he became first a very important milliner. He was already a bi-word for taste in New York before he started designing his first collection. All the great "heads" were wearing Halston but longed for more. And more he gave them.
His chic, modern minimalism was the forerunner of the next wave headed by Calvin Klein, who was Halston's friend. He took American fashion and gave it a world position along with Paris & Milan.
Issey Miyake in Tokyo had already taken up the baton and created total minimalism, the beginning of the Japanese dominance of fashion's new wave.
Without Halston there would have been no licencing of designer names, so that he or she could create endless merchandise that made them rich.
Halston was the forerunner and the mistake maker. He sold his name which rendered him powerless to control the quality of his products and the subsequent downgrading of the Halston name. In doing so, we in the industry all learned from this believe me and are grateful to his legacy.
As I sat watching the film, I realised the story and the magic created from this mans life, on the screen in front of me, made me laugh, cry and laugh again.
I even had the temerity to ask Nathan, Whitney's assistant editor, to, "STOP, PLAY THAT BACK"!!!
I was totally lost in this wonderful adventure that I was watching and so happy that I was privileged to do so.
Whitney has created a fashion film that has outdone, outpaced and will certainly outlive any of the genre that preceded it. He also manages to star in it as well along with a serious motor car.
It is exactly as MARC JACOBS declared after seeing the premier of the film at TRIBECA Film Festival in New York on April 30th.
He said to Whitney " The best fashion movie EVER" and you know what? Marc is always right.
Hold on Tokyo, this movie is coming here, and you will all get a chance to see it.

今回ロサンジェルスで幸運にもこの素晴らしいドキュメント映画を見る機会を頂きました。私の大親友のアン・ゴルソウさんがこのファッションを満喫する映画のプロデュースと脚本を担当しました。彼女についてはまた後に私のL.Aブログでご紹介します。
私とエリーローズはアンにウイットニーさんを紹介してもらい、監督自身からこの映画の試写をしてもらいました。彼はベニスビーチに巨大なロフトを持っていて私たちにフィルムを見せるだけではなく、親切にも私たちがスペシャルイベントの写真を撮る事を許してくれました。この映画を見て私は夢中にさせられ、素晴らしい時間に引き込まれました。この映画に出てくる何人かの人は現在も健在ですが残念な事にホルストンと同様に他界している人もいます。私はアンドレ・レオンタリに笑い、パティー・クリーブランドに涙し、アンジェリカ・ヒューストンには勇気づけられました。私はこの映画でエリーローズがけして知らない男の人生に深くかかわっていくのがわかりました。後でエリーローズがホルストンは洗練された人よねと言いました。彼は洗練さを現実に体現している人でした。
ロイ・ホルストン・フロイックとしてアイオワに生まれ、最初は婦人帽子屋に始まり、彼がニューヨークでの最初のコレクションのデザインを発表する以前から趣味はぬきんでていました。誰もがあこがれてホルストンの帽子をかぶり、そして彼は皆の期待に答えていました。
彼の上品さ、モダン・ミニマリズムは友人であるカルバン・クラインが頂点を極めるニューウェーヴの前兆でした。彼は、パリとミラノと同様にアメリカのファッションを世界のレベルに引き上げました。また東京ではイッセイ・ミヤケが彼のミニマリズムを引き継ついでファッションの新しい波の盛り上がりを作り始めていた。
私はこの映画を見て目の前にあるスクリーンから物語とこの男の現実の人生から創造された魔法をみて,泣かされ、笑わされ、そしてまた泣かされ実感しました。私は無謀にも彼のアシスタントに何度も止めて、回してと繰り返しました。私は素晴らしい冒険に我を忘れ、幸せな時間を過ごしました。ホイットニーは、今までにない素晴らしいファッションフィルムを作成し、そして成功するでしょう。
そしてスーパーカーのようにスターとして脚光を浴びるでしょう。
4月30日ニューヨークで行われたトライベッカーフィルムフェステバルに於いてマーク・ジェイコブスは試写会の後にウイットニーに"今までにない最高のファッ ション映画"と公表しました。マークは正しいと思うわ。東京の皆さん、この映画は来ますよ。楽しみにしてね。
