TOEIC問題集で出てきた表現です。
リスニングの写真の問題で知らない単語が出ると焦りますよね・・・。

Pride and Prejudice（プライドと偏見）

今日の表現は、Pride and Prejudice（プライドと偏見）からです。
何度も映画になっているような名作ですがPENGUIN READERSで読んでます。なかなか進みませんが・・・。


He was very good-looking, extremely agreeable.

彼はとても見た目が良く、極めて感じが良かった。

agreeable: 感じが良い、愛想が良い、人付き合いが良い



He had hoped to see the young ladies, of whose he had heard a great deal.

彼は、話をかなり聞いていた若い娘達に会いたかった。
---関係代名詞の元の文は、He had heard of the ladies a great deal.

a great deal は副詞節で、かなりの・大量に、の意


Elizabeth Bennet had been forced, by the small number of gentleman, to sit out for two dances.

男性の数が少なかったので、エリザベスベネットはダンスを２回休まざるを得なかった。

sit out:　休む、終わりまで見る

sit the night out (doing):　徹夜(で～)する
徹夜する、という表現には stay up というものもあります。

ライオンの檻に飛び込む男

A man was attacked and injured at a Taipei zoo after jumping in to the lion's den and preach Christianity.
男が台北の動物園でライオンの檻に飛び込みキリスト教を説き、襲われて怪我をした。
