Robert Wyatt
is a retired English musician who is best known for his work as a founding member of the influential Canterbury scene bands Soft Machine and Matching Mole. He began his career as a drummer and singer
before becoming paraplegic following an accidental fall from a window in 1973. This event led him to abandon band work and explore other instruments, ultimately leading to a successful solo career that lasted for over forty years.
Wyatt's solo work is known for its individuality and versatility, covering a wide range of musical styles including jazz, folk, and nursery rhyme. He is considered to be a key player in the formative years of British jazz fusion, psychedelia, and progressive rock, and his work became increasingly interpretative, collaborative, and politicized over time.
Despite his success,
Wyatt retired from his music career in 2014, stating that he did not want his music to "go off". He is married to English painter and songwriter Alfreda Benge.
