David Cameron: I am not an American poodle on Afghanistan
Interesting comments from David Cameron on Afghanistan on BBC Radio Two a moment ago.
It was put to the PM that UK troops are in Afghanistan simply to cement the British relationship with the US.
Not so, said Mr Cameron. Indeed, he implied that he could be prepared to countenance withdrawing British forces even if the Americans stayed. (And vice versa, I suppose.)
He said that, for now at least, the British mission is vital to UK national security. But he continued:
“The mission must not go on forever.”
“I’m there for our national interest. This is not about staying in with the Americans.”
“It’s neither dreamy visionary stuff from me, neither is it ‘we must stay in with the Americans at all costs’.”

米国との関係を固めるため、首相は単純にイギリス軍をアフガン内に配置するよう承認したのでしょうか。
そうではない、キャメロン氏は言います。米軍が駐留しつづけたとしても英国軍は撤退できると暗示しています。
彼はいいます。少なくとも今、英国の任務は英国自身の国内のセキュリティとして重要なのだと。
しかし彼はこうも続けます：
「任務は永遠には続かない」
「我々は国益のためにそこにいるのです。これはアメリカと共に居続けるということではない」
「夢心地の妄想でもなければ、‘私たちはどんなことをしてもアメリカ人と共に中に滞在しなければならない'ということでもない」

ちょっと違いますね、キャメロン新首相。ブレアとかなり違う。
