A letter from Sayaka
In Japan, Halloween-Party means a fancy-dress party, doesn't it? If you go to a pub in a fancy dress, some pubs offer a free pint of beer or you can get discounted beer all night in Tokyo, so going to a pub, wearing fancy dress for a Halloween party is a regular thing for Tokyo people, I guess. I have been to an Irish pub in Shinjuku wearing a witch's hat once, even wearing only a hat was enough for me to get one free drink. Well, how about in Holland? It is completely different from Japan. People here do not do anything special. Of course I have not seen anyone wearing a fancy dress costume. Some stores just put pumpkins in front of them, and it is the only thing which makes us feel like Halloween has come. I saw big pumpkins in the yard of a house one month ago. Probably they were grown for Halloween, but I really felt as if a witch or a sprite would appear there.
日本では、ハロウィーン＝仮装パーティーとなっていますね。仮装してパブに行くと、フリードリンク一杯とか、終夜ドリンクが割引されたりするし、思い思いのコスチュームを披露するのはいつの頃からか定番となっているようです。私も一度、魔女の帽子をかぶって新宿のアイリッシュパブに行ったことがありますが、帽子だけでもドリンクが一杯タダになりました。では、オランダではどうかというと、日本とは全く違って、ハロウｨーンだからって、別に何もしません。もちろん、仮装してる人なんて一人も見ません。ただ、いくつかのお店の軒先にカボチャが少し置かれているのが唯一ハロウィーンらしき雰囲気なだけです。一ヶ月前にある家の庭に、立派なカボチャがなっているのを見ました。ハロウィーン用ではないと思いますが、なんだか妖精か魔女かが出てきそうでもありました。
