The Shakespeare is one of Sheffield’s last remaining original coaching inns; built in 1833 to serve the former industrial heart of the city. To the rear of the site are the remains of the former Bower Springs Furnace cementation works - which used to produce blister steel and is now a designated historical heritage survey site. We feature quality hand-pulled cask ales, including local brewery Kelham Island Easy Rider, Black Sheep Best Bitter and Bass Cask. We have an extensive wine list including limited individual bottles from around the world from our private cellar. We stock a selection of interesting spirits and choice whiskies with old favourites and limited runs. Our knowledgeable staff and extensive tasting notes will guide you and provide detailed information about our range. We also run introductions to wine and whisky evenings. The Shakespeare has a large, enclosed beer garden - a proper sun trap in the summer - with a discreet, intimate secret beer garden tucked away around the corner. On balmy summer evenings we run barbeques serving simple, wholesome and high quality sourced food with vegetarian options. We are child and pet friendly. We supply cards and board games, including chess, draughts, connect four, jenga and have regular games nights. The Shakespeare is one of the few pubs that still features a dartboard and our pool table is a more than reasonable 50p a game. We play music right across the spectrum from hosting traditional Irish sessions and world music nights, to good time rock n roll, hip hop, punk, cutting-edge electronica, blues and all and every other genre. We have live gigs from both local and touring bands. Just some of the bands who have played here include: the Warlocks, Asteroid 4, Freelovebabies (Spaceman3/Spiritualized), members of Brianjonestown Massacre, Monkey Swallows the Universe, Champion Kickboxer and Kid Acne. Plus DJ nights from Two Left Feet, Seven by Seven, Kabal and Rough Disko. The Shakespeare regularly displays artwork and exhibitions. We have various spaces across the venue that can be utilised in a manner of different ways from outdoor sculpture work to indoor photographic shows. If you are interested in organising an exhibition or an artist wishing to display artwork, photographs, sculpture or installations, then please get in contact. We are flexible and adaptable to any ideas. The Shakespeare was nominated in the Exposed 2007 Awards for Best Traditional Pub.
