I stayed with my mother-in-law after my first baby was born.

One day she was making fried rice (チャーハン) for lunch and she needed some green onions (青ネギ).  She asked me to go outside and cut some from the garden.

I was happy to have something helpful to do.  I took her garden scissors and went outside and cut some green onions.  I brought the green onions to お母さん in the kitchen.  She took them and told me thank you.  She cut them up and put them in the fried rice.

When the fried rice was ready, we all sat down and started eating.  The fried rice tasted bad!  It had a strange flavor.  Everyone was puzzled (訝しげに?).  Why did the fried rice taste so strange?

Then my mother-in-law asked me, "Where did you get the green onions?"
I pointed out the window at the green onions in the garden that I had cut.

My mother-in-law laughed.

"Those aren't green onions!  Those are daffodils (水仙)!"

We were eating fried rice with daffodils!

We had to throw away everyone's fried rice.  I don't remember what we had for lunch after that...

Sorry, お母さん!ショボーンえーん
