I love Japanese manzai.  My favorite manzai duo (コンビ)is Non Style. (I think that Ishida-san is a comedic genius!)  Well, a student asked me recently if there is manzai in the U.S.

Since I was a child, most American comedians have done "stand up" comedy.  This means that one comedian stands alone on the stage and makes people laugh.  The most famous stand up comedians when I was young were Eddie Murphy (エディ マーフィ) , Steve Martin (スティーブ マーティン), and Robin Williams (ロビン ウィリアムズ).

But when I was a little girl, we could sometimes see old black-and-white (白黒)TV programs with two comedians standing together on the stage and joking together.  When I see Japanese manzai, I remember those old American comedy duos (コンビ).  But I haven't actually watched any of them in a very long time, so my memory is fuzzy (”はっきり”の反対).

But I do remember that there was usually a "straight man" and a "funny man".  These are very similar to the Japanese ツッコミ and ボケ.  The American comedy duos often wore suits, like Japanese comedy duos.  They often ran onto the stage, similar to the Japanese manzai duo. (”どうも!”)

Here are the 3 most famous comedy duos from the 1950's.

Laurel and Hardy
