I love Kansai dialect. My dream is to be able to speak Kansai dialect like a real Kansai person. I love to watch Japanese comedians. They often speak with a Kansai accent, and use Kansai dialect. (accent = 訛り, dialect = 方言)
I often try to speak like a Kansai person in my home, with my children. わからへん! はようせんとあかんよ! お母さん寝るで!
I don't even know if that is actually Kansai dialect, but it sounds like it to me. I try to say those with a Kansai intonation. I think I'm getting better and better, but my children tell me, "お母さん,やめて!”
They don't appreciate my wonderful Kansai dialect skills.
Yesterday I had to make some phone calls to my credit card company. The first time I called, I could hear that the woman had a Kansai accent. She said です like "deSU". I had to call again later in the day. A different person answered the telephone. He also had a Kansai accent. At the end of the phone call I asked him, "By any chance (もしかしたら)are you in Kansai?" He said, "Yes, this call center is in Osaka." I said, "I knew it by your accent. I like to hear the Kansai accent, so thank you very much!" He laughed, and said, "Oh! I'm happy to hear that."
After hanging up I felt foolish for having said that, but it was so fun to hear a real live Kansai accent--not just someone on TV.
