昨年亡くなられた名女優である樹木希林さんのエッセイ集を読んでいて出会った言葉です。
I found this in the essay of Ms. Kiki Kirin, a great Japanese actress who passed away last year .
「きょうようのあること」
Having “kyo yo.”
思わずクスリと笑っちゃいましたね。
I couldn't stop chuckling about it.
これはつまり同音異義語を使った掛け言葉。
This is a kind of pun, that is to say a joke using Japanese homonyms.
「きょうよう」は「教養」とも「今日、用」とも読めるわけですが・・・・・
In Japanese there are two homonyms for “kyo yo.” One of them is sophistication or education. Another is to have something to do on the day.
希林さんの意味したものは「今日、用があること」
Ms. Kirin meant the second one.
すなわちその日にやることがあるということなのでした。
Having something to do on the day.
今日、やることがあるというのは素晴らしいこと。
She wrote that it was wonderful if you had something to do on the day.
誠に同感でした。
I really agree with her.
