When I overheard some colleagues of mine talking about recent movies in the office yesterday, I suddenly realized that I was so behind movies since I had not taken my time to go out to see any the last couple of years.

So I dragged myself out of the office into scorching heat and high humidity outside, hopped on a bus to the nearest movie theater for I had a few hours to kill before getting back to work and the entire Ameba service was on maintenance till 6:00 p.m.

This movie, Carnage, was co-written and directed by Roman Polanski. I like Roman Polanski movies very much, among which my favorites are "The Pianist" (2002) and Oliver Twist (2005).

Carnage

I do not want to reveal too much about this movie to end up with spoiling it for my readers, but what I saw was what Henry David Thoreau said, "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation." And the silence was broken in this movie.

There was an incident that two sets of parents were brought together to discuss the matter at hand. However, slowly but surely, pent-up anger and hidden hatred lurk as the talks progress. Private and strongly-held values that are unrelated to the matter of discussion emerge and are belittled by remarks by those who do not share similar values. Seemingly intelligent conversations in a superficially cordial manner among supposed to be well-educated adults who live in what we call a "civilized" society turn into childish bickering and chaos, a scene of carnage.

It is a dark comedy movie. The situations are miserable and helpless to the extent that we can only laugh as third party bystanders. But I am sure we all see ourselves in it.

Starring Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz, and John C. Reilly, the title word "carnage" means "slaughter, butchery, or massacre" and the Japanese title for this movie is "Adults' Altercation."

Oops, I wrote too much. I will put out my translation in the next article.
