In the US or here in Mexico, I see many Japanese tourists. There is one thing I notice that many Japanese tourists tend to forget in foreign countries.
アメリカでも、最近来たここメキシコでも、日本人の観光客を多く見かけます。ひとつ日本人が外国で忘れがちなことに気が付きます。
It is to tip.
チップを渡すことです。
I was on one of the airport transportation buses coming from the airport. There were two Japanese young men on it, who were concentrating on videotaping the scenery.
私は空港からのバスに乗っていました。若い日本人の男性が2人が乗り合わせていて、風景のビデオを取るのに余念がありませんでした。
One by one, the bus stops at each hotel to unload passengers. The driver opens the trunk and takes out luggage for them. Everyone leaves the driver his tip. However, alas, those two Japanese passengers were preoccupied as soon as they got off, and just grabbed their luggage they asked to take out and left. The driver was standing there with a blank face.
バスは各々のホテルに停まり、一人、また一人と乗客を降ろしていきます。運転手はトランクを開け、乗客の荷物を取り出します。降りる人はみな、それぞれ運転手にチップを渡しています。しかし、哀しいかな、その日本人の二人連れはバスを降りた途端、心ここにあらずで、頼んで出してもらった荷物をつかみ、行ってしまいました。運転手は、ポカンとしばしその場に立ったままでした。
In Japan, everyone is considered that he is paid decently in any job, even in services industry. There is no custom to tip anyone in Japan, except for special cases. However, in the US or Mexico, or in many other countries, tips are already assumed that they will receive, so their base salary is set low in services industry. Their livelihood depends on their received tips.
日本では、サービス産業を含め、いかなる仕事でも、かなりの給与がもらえていると考えられています。日本では、特別な場合を除いてチップを渡す習慣がありません。しかし、アメリカでもメキシコでも、その他の国々でも、チップはすでにもらえるものと予め考えられており、サービス産業の給与の基本は低く設定されています。チップには、彼らの生活がかかっているのです。
Although tips are not supposed to be forced, please do not forget to tip when you received services. Gratuity, as it says, is from your heart but sometimes the words of thanks are not enough.
チップは強制されて払うものではありませんが、どうかサービスを受けたときはチップを忘れないでください。心付けというのは、文字通り気持ちから払うものですが、感謝の言葉だけでは充分でない時があります。
