さて、今回からリスニングについて、話しましょう。
The human brain is a strange thing. Even if we hear or see something, if it does not concern us or if it is something that we do not understand, our brains do not process it or bring it to our attention. An example is the human voices on the streets. We hear them but we do not pay attention. If they are in our native languages, our brains will understand them but still we stop there. When it comes to foreign languages, this phenomenon is more apparent. Our brains cannot process sounds we do not understand. And even if we have heard those sounds before, our brains only can process them at the level that we heard them.
人間の頭脳というのはおかしな物で、何かを見聞きしてもそれが理解できなかったり、自分に関係の無いことだったりした場合は、脳はその情報を処理することなく、私たちの意識にも上げてくることはしません。その例は、街で聞く人の声です。聞こえてはいるけれど、私たちは殆どそれに注意をしません。母国語では雑踏は聞こえていて、そして分かっても尚、脳は処理をそこで止めます。外国語になるとこの現象はもっと明確になります。脳は理解出来ない音は処理できません。例えその音を以前聞いたことがあっても、脳はやはり聞いたことのあるレベルでしか処理できないのです。
Therefore, despite we know all the words within a sentence, if our understanding is on the word-by-word level, our brains will fail to understand the meaning of the entire sentence. So relatively easy sentences may fail us. But there are cases when we read the sentences, we understand them. This is simply because, in these cases, our reading ability is stronger than listening ability. Therefore, when we want to understand English by listening on the sentence level, we need to hear it on that level.
ですから、一つの文章の中で、単語の意味は全部わかるのだけれども、その理解が単語のレベルであった場合は、文章全体の意味を捉えることが難しくなります。だから、比較的平易な文章でも、我々を悩ませる結果となります。しかし、その同じ文章を書いてみれば、なんだ、ということがあるのです。これは単に私たちの読解力が聴解力より優れているからにほかなりません。だから、英語を文章レベルで聞いて理解したい場合は、このレベルで聞いておく必要があります。
