A JICA volunteer in Chuuk finished his 2 year’s activity and left Chuuk yesterday. I have been with him for 1 year and 9 months. There will be 5 JICA volunteers in Chuuk as he doesn’t have a successor. I thought that persons who stay here have a harder time than a person who leaves, though the word of parting is same for either of them.
Now, an event of returning to Japan after 3 months is crossing my mind. I recently realized again that Chuuk has a lot of good points. I felt this very strongly while I was playing baseball with kids whom I met on the way to my home after work.
先輩隊員が２年間の活動を終え、昨日チュークを去った。これまで1年９カ月を共にした隊員。彼には後任がいないので、これでチューク州の隊員は５名となる。旅立つ人と残る人。どちらにとっても同じ別れだが、残される人たちの方が辛いものだと感じた。
それと同時に残り３か月を切った帰国の文字がよぎる。最近になって改めて想う。やっぱチュークは良いところもたくさんあるなと。仕事終わりに出会った子どもたちの輪に入り、子どもたちが遊んでいたテニスボールと木の棒を使って野球をしながら、しみじみと考えている自分がいた。
