ドジャースの大谷翔平選手が9月2日、敵地でのパイレーツ戦で驚愕の120マイル（約193キロ）弾を放った。7試合ぶり46号は自己最速の一打。

この”超高速”弾を掴んだのは、20歳の美人女子大生マヤ・ボーガンさんだ。

「ものすごい勢いで飛んできて、怖かった…。私は触らなかったんです。隣にいた子はビールに当たってしまって…。その後、ボールが落ちて、私が拾ったんです。最初は信じられなくて、でも周りを見たらみんなが大声で叫んでいて、あ、私が取ったんだって。信じられない」本人談

バージニア州から妹と妹の彼氏と遊びに来たというマヤさんは野球ファンで、地元のマイナーの試合もよく行くという。大谷翔平についてもよく知っているといい、彼は現代のベーブ・ルース。信じられないくらいすごい」と印象を語った。

この本塁打ボールは絶対にキープするという。「売るつもりはない。値段がつけられないもの。売ってしまったらもう手元に残らないし、意味がない。だから大切に家に置いておきます」。インタビューの直後、警備員のおじさんが、ボールに「OHTANI 46号ホームラン」と書き込んだ。サインボールのバイヤーにとっては、価値が出なくなる恐れのある”書き込み”だが、マヤさんたちは嬉しそうに書いてもらっていた。本当に家に飾るのだろう。

On September 2nd, Dodgers pitcher Shohei Ohtani hit an astonishing 120-mph (approximately 193 km/h) home run against the Pirates on the road. His 46th home run, his first in seven games, was also his fastest.

The person who caught this "ultra-fast" hit was Maya Bogan, a beautiful 20-year-old college student.

"It came flying at me with so much speed, I was scared... I didn't touch it. The kid next to me got hit by a beer... Then the ball fell, and I picked it up. At first, I couldn't believe it, but then I looked around and everyone was yelling, and I was like, 'Oh, I caught it!' I couldn't believe it."

Maya, who came from Virginia to visit with her sister and her boyfriend, is a baseball fan and often attends local minor league games. She says she knows Shohei Ohtani well, describing him as a modern-day Babe Ruth. "He's just incredible," she says.

She says she'll definitely keep this home run ball. "I have no intention of selling it. It's priceless. If I sold it, I'd never have it again, and it would be pointless. So I'm going to keep it at home." Immediately after the interview, a security guard wrote "OHTANI 46th Home Run" on the ball. While this "inscription" could potentially diminish the ball's value to autographed ball buyers, Maya and her friends seemed happy to have it inscribed. They'll probably display it at home.

「落ち込むことはなかった」と語るが、不安はあったようだった。

「しんどかったというよりかは、何ていうんですかね。2回目の手術の後に元のように投げられるようになるのかなっていう、不安みたいなものはありましたけど。投げていくことに自信は増えていった」と振り返った。

「正直2回目の手術……1回目もそうでしたけど、どういう風になっていくのかなっていうのは、プラン通りに行かないことの方が多いと思うので、その中で少しでも投げられていることに関しては、結果云々ではなくて、プロセス自体は今のところいいんじゃないかなと思います」

"It wasn't that it was tough, but how can I put it? I did have some anxiety about whether I'd be able to pitch as well as I used to after the second surgery. But my confidence grew as I continued pitching," he recalled.

"Honestly, after my second surgery...and it was the same with the first, I'm not sure how things will turn out. Things often don't go as planned, but as far as being able to pitch even a little bit, I think the process itself is going well for now, not the results."
