TWO of Dartmouth's longstanding firefighters with a combined service of 68 years have retired from the town's Fire and Rescue Service.

Denis Abraham joined the service in 1974 following a chimney fire at his next door neighbour's house and Keith Isaac signed up in 1978.

Denis was invited to fire drills by firefighter Brian Langworthy, serving under Peter Denning who was the station officer.

His first major incident was a gorse fire in Strete which went on for three days and involved fire crews from across Devon.

Keith was a familiar face at the fire station before he joined because his mother used to send him to the station with cups of tea and coffee for his father air jordan John who was a firefighter.

Both men were involved in fighting the fire in the historic heart of Dartmouth at the end of May and both agree that it was the worst air jordan fire that they had ever fought.

Denis and Keith were each presented with a plaque, certificate and a trophy to mark the time that they spent in the fire service at special function held at the Deer Park Inn and during the celebratory meal received a retirement cake.

With color, grayscale and infrared scanning modes, image capture is achieved within two seconds; ten times faster than most conventional scanning technologies. The 540 has no moving parts, utilizes the Twain 1.9 imaging standard and is compatible with both the 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows 7, Vista and XP.

"The DP540 is the culmination of discussions with our clients, primarily OEMs and VARs, and continues our mandate of developing the most innovative and cost-effective document capture products," said David P. Clark, Chief Executive Officer of Document Capture. "The market for ultra-fast ID image capture, while vast, is underserved. We believe that the 540 exceeds our stringent client requirements and has the potential to become the leader of its category in a significant number of sectors, including finance, security, healthcare and retail."

At the heart of the 540's speed and power is a camera based image capture system (CMOS) as opposed to the standard Contact Image Sensor (CIS) technology used currently. While it allows one page scanning, the 540's flat surface allows the efficient image capture of passports and other bulky ID or registration documents. As the leader in page-fed USB powered scanning technology, the 540 expands Document Capture's product offerings and fills a significant market need in the image capture technology space.

THE Lower Hutt mayoral race has turned feral, with accusations of "gutter politics" against incumbent David Ogden and claims of an orchestrated smear campaign.

Challenger Ray Wallace has accused Mr Ogden of misrepresenting the truth about Mr Wallace's position on water metering in a campaign pamphlet mailout this week.

He said Mr Ogden's actions were a desperate attempt to cling to power.

Yesterday, Mr Wallace lodged a formal complaint with Hutt City Council electoral officer Stuart Duncan, who has started an investigation and sought a legal opinion as to whether Mr Ogden has breached electoral laws.

If the decision, Gucci expected today, finds a prima facie breach, the matter will be referred to police.

Mr Ogden hit back at Mr Wallace last night, accusing him of having a "meltdown".

"It's like going to Zimbabwe. Are the police going to come round and beat me up for criticising an opponent? It's ridiculous. We're in a democracy."

Mr Ogden's pamphlet sets out the case for and against household water metering. It says Capacity, a council-controlled water management company, has embarked on a trial installing hundreds of household water meters.

"According to Capacity, the trial is to get 'more accurate information on domestic water usage' and to help gauge effectiveness of leak reduction activity."

Mr Ogden, who is MLB jerseys opposed to metering, then says Capacity has suggested water metering of all households as a priority initiative to make water savings and that Mr Wallace is Hutt City Council's appointed Capacity director.

Mr Wallace said yesterday he opposed blanket water metering but the pamphlet mischievously suggested he was a proponent.

The pamphlet was a smear campaign designed to derail his own mayoralty bid. "I'm absolutely devastated. He's getting stuff out that's blatantly untrue. It's a deliberate attempt to damage my campaign. I see it as gutter politics of the worst kind.

"He goes on about values MLB jerseys but clearly he has none if he's allowed that to go out under his name."

Though Capacity had started the metering trial, it was simply for monitoring purposes to gather accurate statistics on household usage and leaks, Mr Wallace said.

He had campaigned against metering at the last election and Mr Ogden was aware of his position.

Mr Ogden denied he was playing dirty political games.

It was a fact that Capacity was testing water meters and that Mr Wallace was a director. "He hasn't resigned from that. I think he's just having a bit of a meltdown. All we're doing is just debating the question of his policies."
