私の生徒がハンガリー留学のために必要な志望理由書を書かなければならず、それの手伝いをしていた去年の年末。
第一次審査である書類審査をパスして、第2次審査のオンライン面接もパスし、無事合格したので、ここに志望理由書のサンプルを載せておこうと思う。
実際にこの志望理由書で2校（内容は学校によって専攻が異なるので若干変えてある）通っているので成功例と言えると思う。
志望理由書など個人的に書いたことがないので、いろいろとネットで参考にさせてもらったが、やはりなにかピンとこない感じがした。
英語ネイティブの娘ともいろいろ相談したけど、ネイティブに言わせると、「yeah , right」と読みながら突っ込みを入れたくなる文章がほとんどだそうだ。
結局のところ、私も娘も志望理由書など書いたことがないので、yeah rightと思うような文章を使用したのだけれども、例えば
this program will help me to achieve my goal in the future
those experiences will be beneficial for my career
crucial step for me to realize my dream.
ここら辺は、読んでいて突っ込みたくなるそうだ。
あと、自分では使わなかったけど、「両国のかけ橋になりたい」的な文章も好まないらしい。ｗｗ
サンプルをネット検索すると一番出てくるのが「かけ橋」なんだけどね。ｗ
ちょっとうまく説明できないんだけど、多分日本人が好む言い回しなんだと思う。
「将来のゴールに向かって」とか、「これらの経験が私のキャリアに」とか、「夢を実現させるためには重要」でとか、こういう言い回し。
確かに日本語で志望理由書を書きなさいと言われたら、書きたくなる言い回しだよね。
それがどうもネイティブにはピンとこないらしい。（まあでも使ったけど笑笑笑）
それはともかくとしても、これから先、留学したい方で英語で志望理由書を書かなければいけないと困っている方たちには助けになるかもしれないと思うので、ここに載せておきます。
難しくは書いてないし、どちらかと言えば簡単目に書いてあるので、必要に合わせて単語を変えたり、もっと文章を難しくしたりしてください。
The main purpose to apply for this program is to learn English and history at ○○○ University. I believe that the experience through this program will help me to achieve my goal in the future, which is to be a translator and an interpreter.
The reason why I would like to be a translator is because of an experience I had growing up while watching foreign dramas in Japanese subtitles. The shows and movies made me interested in foreign countries and their languages. This eventually led me to learn English to be a host family for exchange students. However, every time we accepted exchange students, we had a hard time conversing with them because of the language barrier, and I wish I could have spoken English better. One thing that I noticed was when we watched American movies together the laughing timing was different. That was because I was reading the Japanese subtitles. In that moment I decided to be a translator.
To become a translator, I believe that studying the English language and literature is beneficial. When we read literature in English, we can learn about, not only what is being said, but also how to say things in different ways. In addition, being able to learn about the historical background of the literature and understanding the people of those generation is meaningful. If I have a deeper understanding of those literatures, I can cultivate it and diligently translate the original texts along with their background. The English and American Studies program in ○○○ University will consist of only international students. Being able to study with students from different countries will help me to learn about their backgrounds, modern values and those experiences will be beneficial for my career in the future.
If I am given an opportunity to study at ○○○ University, that will allow me to have conversations and exchange ideas about American studies with international students. That will open the way to become an interpreter, too. Being a translator is different from being an interpreter. It requires a social skill. Taking various English classes with international students will sharpen that social skill. This will have me to understand the differences and complexity of conversations and languages.
Setting this goal mentioned above, there are two critical abilities that are necessary to achieve this goal. The first is language skills. Being able to speak English fluently will allow conversations to flow on equal terms. Also, building good relationships with people from all different backgrounds will give me experiences in adapting to different cultures and lifestyles.
Secondly, there is multidirectional learning. By pursuing a degree from a university outside of my home country will allow me to expand myself mentally and be able to fully realize the cultural and personality differences between Japan as well as other countries. Although Hungary is a country with a lot of attractions, it still seems so unfamiliar to Japanese people. Therefore, this degree will play an important role in contributing to both countries. I would love to translate and interpret some of the Hungarian movies and introduce them to Japanese people. Hungary can provide me with a great opportunity to gain, not only knowledge, but also a real experience that will benefit my future career and possibly future generation’s cultures too.
Studying in Hungary is a crucial step for me to realize my dream. In order to become a translator and an interpreter, it is necessary to not just learn, but understand English. If given an opportunity to stay in Hungary, I would like to be a force of impact to English and American studies in Hungary and Japan by studying at ○○○ University.
