Taipei Zoo will be holding special exhibition on October 30 to introduce its newest members to the public – a pair of red-crowned cranes! The event also coincides with the 97th anniversary of the zoo’s founding and the 25th anniversary of its relocation from Yuanshan to Muzha.
Meet the Red-crowned Cranes
In the evening of September 14, Taipei Zoo received two important guests from Japan – a pair of red-crowned cranes, also known as Japanese cranes.
One of the avian creatures is a 9-year-old male crane named BIG; the other is a 6-year-old female called KIKA. The two birds are the gift of Kushiro City Zoo in Hokkaido.
This is the first time Japan has agreed to export red-crowned cranes to a zoo abroad, making this event an important landmark in the field of international animal exchange for the two countries. It is also a sign of approval for Taipei Zoo’s efforts in nature and animal conservation.
Red-crowned cranes represent good fortune and longevity in Japan. They are classified as endangered birds and listed on Appendix I of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora).
The public will have a chance to see BIG on October 30, following the conclusion of the mandatory quarantine period
