Penelope Tree and David Bailey
The model Penelope Tree and photographer David Bailey
fell in love on their first assignment together .
She was the great Sixties model.
Photographers transformed her into all sorts of wild vision.
She was the strange and beautiful discovery of Diana Vreeland
and Richard Avedon.
This photograph was taken on a visit to our Connecticut house in 1971.

ANNA WINTOUR
The editor-in-cheif of VOGUE is one of the most attractive personalities
in the fashion world.

HELMUT NEWTON
On the beach in Miami, one of Helmut's favorite places in 1995
Helmut is a truly original photographer .
He has maintained great sophistication and style while bringing a blatant
eroticism into fashion photography.

JASPER JOHNS
The painter at his house in stony point , New York,1977
Jasper is marvelous cook, and he has a wonderful sense of humor.
We've been friends since we met in the Fifties.

ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG
The artist in his downtown New York studio in 1965. He likes to surround
himself with mementos, sketches, and work by his friends.
Ranschenberg was with my stepdaughter Francine at Black Mountain
Collage. We became friends through her, and he sent me suggestions
for my circle paintings.

VLADIMIR HOROWITZ
He had a great sense of humor and gift for parody. Here he is imitating a pianist.
Horowitz lived near us in Connecticut with his wife, Wanda Toscanini .
They sent us tickets to all his concerts. This photograph was taken in his house
in New York in 1974.

Umberto Saba

Marcel Duchamp
One of the most brilliant innovators of modern art, in his New York apartment
in 1959. In back of him is The Nine Malic Moulds, a study for his Large Glass.
Duchamp is still an inspiration to young artists.

Max Ernst and Dorothea Tanning
The German surrealist painter in Paris. The Painter Dorothea Tanning,
his wife ,in her studio at Huismes, France , 1959

Brassai
I worked with Brassai for many years when I was at Vu. He was a bird of the
night, and he gave us indelible picture. This was still the era of bordellos,
and he was able to penetrate that life, much the way Weegee later penetrated
the underworld of New York. Brassai was wonderful draftsman and sculptor,
and become a friend of Picasso. His photographs of Picasso's studio at night
are among the most extraordinary documents of modern art. I have always
been intrigued by the fact that so many good photographers came out of
central Europe, especially Hungary. Brassai was Hungarian origin, and so was
Robert Capa. There must be a reason for this. The geography? The light?
This photograph was taken in 1963. Brassai is waiting goodbye as he leave
my sculpture studio in Connecticut. His eyes explain everything about him.

Le Corbusier
The visionary Swiss architect was also a sculptor and painter. Here he is in his
Paris studio in 1954.

AGENDA
